Looks like Apple listened to the feedback and brought back the old style non-horizontal keyboard to the new Apple TV.

Edit: Nevermind. I guess it was a bug? Restarted and I'm back to the horizontal keyboard. :-(

With more horizontal scrolling hope they add "Scroll direction: natural" like on the Mac Trackpad. Really prefer the my Apple TV Remote work the way the rest of my devices work.

This is not new. You will see the horizontal layout when you are using the touchpad remote, and the square layout when you are using a traditional remote with directional buttons (i.e. a universal remote or the old Apple remote).

Oh weird. I didn't know that, but I'm seeing it with with the new touch remote.

It actually makes sense. Once you get used to it, the horizontal layout works better with the touchpad, since you can flick back and forth over longer distances pretty quickly while navigating in small steps is more fiddly. Directional buttons are exactly the opposite, so it makes sense to use a more compact layout in this case.
