If true, I would be totally pissed off if I invested in an M2 and then found out 7-10 months later these new computers come out.

I’m guessing another January release. What I found more interesting is the 30inch iMac.

It would be interesting if they update all Macs/iPads to the M3/pro/max at the same time, rather than staggering them.

more so looks like folks playing telephone game .

power on Bloomberg article reference CNBC article says

“… But let’s get back to Apple’s existing product categories. The company is focused on several key updates for the second half of this year and the first half of 2024. …”

CNBC says Watch and iPhone this Fall ( and the sky is blue ) , but really doesn’t put a date on the laptops either ( tags the 13, 14 , 16 inch models with M3 , no timeline ) .

and somehow arrive at new laptops this year . More likely new laptops in next 365 days ( a year; not ‘this’) . If Apple has iMac queued up that would make lots more sense . It is the 25th anniversary …flake on the iMac during the anniversary year … that is more than mildly lame . If they threw relatively very low volume M3 at something , that model would be a good pick.

the 30” iMac says ‘early work’ ….which likely means it is not a high priority product and chance will never see light of day . Gurman also years ago reported a 27“ iMac that got sidelined to finish out the 24 ‘iPad on a stick’ iMac . Sound more like there is one internal faction that wants an large screen iMac and another faction that doesn’t . Kind of smells like a “where do we attach old/mature/R&D-paid-for XDR panels once we update to XDR 2 “ project. Probably not the return of the affordable larger iMac ( i.e., more so priced into the gap between the Utlra Studio and the MP… and Apple spins it as ‘free’ computer with your XDR screen and $999 stand ) .

Not if you read the original report from Gurman. Why would anyone link/read CNBC?

If anything, Gurman suggests M3 won't come until after Vision, which definitely means 2024.

For years everyone whinges on and on that apple take their time releasing the latest Intel chips, “outdated hardware” etc. Now they can release their own stuff on their own timeline you’re gonna be annoyed that they release a new cpu months after you got yours?

There is a circle that can never be broken there. At some point someone is annoyed that they got their new chip just as the next gen was released. You’d never buy anything ever with that mindset. If it’s good enough now it will be good enough then.

I haven’t gotten anything. I’m waiting for the M3 chip.

However, if I purchased something in January. That has an 14-18 month release cycle . And they released this new one in September/October 8 months later. It isn’t necessarily unreasonable to be at the very least annoyed.

You’d be forever annoyed then, because tech advances quickly.

Yes it does. And no I wouldn’t. This chip has quite a bit of hype. If one decided that the M2 was released now so they spent $5k on a MBP, as waiting 14-18 months is too long, only for this new first of its kind chip to be released 10 months earlier than the usual release cycle. My guess is it would ruffle more than a few feathers.

This is all speculation, and I’m guessing it’s going to be early 2024 for the release, unless they decide to standardize everything that has an M series chip to have one release for every new iteration of the M chips.

I think the M3 lineup of computers will begin the release in 2024, like @JPack said.

What makes me think that? Let’s see. The N3B process will only be used on the A17 of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max (Ultra?), because of the low yield and the expensive prices. All the subsequent SoCs will be based on the N3E process, and I’m pretty sure that includes the M3 and all its variants. When is expected the N3E process to ramp up production? I think towards the end of this year, so I wouldn’t expect M3 devices at least until spring 2024.

Think about who's buying the MBA 15-inch in the first place. Most of them will be laggards. The Apple Silicon transition started in November 2020 and it's now more than 2.5 years later.

Besides this forum and few other nerdy spaces, most consumers don't care about M3. They already know faster chips come out regularly. And let's say it does "ruffle a few feathers." So what? Will they swear never to buy Apple again?

I hope so. I'm kinda regretting getting only 16GB of memory on my MBP M2 Pro. I hate seeing it swap constantly.

 Yeah, last time I had a machine with 16GB of RAM was a windows machine I built in 2012. My M1 Max MBP has 64 ... but I also run some heavy duty IDEs and VMs, so I need the memory. Still, I'd be hard pressed to get a machine with less than 32GB RAM.

Anxiously awaiting the M3 MBP!

I don't see why you should be upset about it, think of it as your investment in the future success of Apple (and making your wallet lighter). ;)

30" iMac would be interesting (big screen and high resolution hopefully) - but the same problem, buy once - throw it away two years later and spend another AUD$4000 on the next greatest thing.

On the flip side one of my other Macs is from 2010, fully upgraded now and running a modern GPU on latest version of Monterey and still going nicely.

Or you could sell it because the resale value of Macs are great.

Don't hold on to machines for years and years, that's when they will deprecate the most in value, especially if you are still holding on to an Intel based Mac. Also your basement or attic will be full of useless Macs 😂

Right, the hype, and surely the M2 will lose half its performance and start failing at the tasks and jobs it was purchased for the moment the M3 is released.

I'll wait for a M3 Mac Studio if more power is really needed.

I have an M2 Max MBP with 96GB...speed alone won't make me upgrade (maybe an RGB OLED display with high Rec. 2020 coverage display would).

Never buy a Windows PC then. The industry practice on that side is to refresh the lineups every 4-6 months, even if there are not new CPUs being released.

Howdy cucakes2000,

On the outset, I agree with you. However, Apple makes the situation more dire by not announcing when a new release is pending and immediately obsoleting the outgoing model. If you drop $4K on a new MBP, and the next day (or week) a new model comes out, and Apple stops selling yours, is very annoying. Most other PC vendors don't release this way, they introduce new products, but typically continue to sell the older models, often at a lower price for at least a little while, so it is less frustrating.

But like you said, just because a new model came out, doesn't mean the one you just got is garbage, it just doesn't feel good :)

Thanks!

I think I would be substantially more frustrated if they reduced the price of the model I just bought to be honest! Personal opinion obviously. If I hadn’t bought it yet and didn’t mind a last gen then I would feel differently I’m sure.

I don’t mind how Apple are doing things recently. It’s much better than how it’s been for almost the entire Intel era, when little regular updating to match the rest of the industry (who were all using the same tech) Apple was always outdated. I prefer new tech released when it’s ready, and although they’re secretive, you only have to follow sites like macrumours to not be too perturbed when they release a new gen, as you’re normally in the know.

Why would you need to throw a perfectly good computer away after two years?
Just because a newer SoC comes out does not mean the previous one is obsolete or that the computer is no good.
I'm still running a 2011 iMac and it works wonderfully.
Consumerism and obsession with upgrading is sickening.

One of the reasons for the difference between PC vendors and Apple in terms of releasing new product and sunsetting older product is how Apple's supply chain has been set up. Most PC vendors just mass produce a ton of any given model, then they have to sell them off at a discount once newer models hit market. Apple has relied heavily on "just in time" manufacturing, where product is built to meet demand and inventor surpluses are minimized. In fact, it was Tim Cook's adoption of JIT methodology that factored into Jobs naming Cook his successor as CEO:

I recently 2 x 15” Air. I know something new is always around the corner. 15” for me is the perfect size. I also thought about a 14” and 16” MBP. The 14 is too small and 16” too large. I would have happily bought a 15” MBP.
