For those who don't now what has been going on in 49erLand:
The 49er's owners, the Yorks, have been planning for years to leave San Francisco because the the city wanted them to follow the plan of the SF Giants who famously built their own stadium and pissed off billionaire owners all across the country who then had a harder time getting the taxpayers to buy them upscale new homes.
The deal was to build not just a stadium, but upscale malls, etc to revitalize the awful Hunter's Point area where their decaying stadium, Candlestick Park, is located.
Steve Young and Brent Jones, ex star players and real smart guys, got a group together to buy the Yorks out and go with the city plan. The Yorks wouldn't sell because they wanted to give the team to their son Jed who was getting too old for toy trucks and Leggos.
The Yorks were rumored to be secretly planning to go to LA to get a free stadium. Elder York John made his mark by not allowing the players to get free stamps from the office... and more.
Now they are allegedly serious about a new facility in Santa Clara and the taxpayers actually voted in funds in partnership with the team to build a rather minimalistic, stadium there.
The idea of co-owning with the Raiders seems to be dead. Al Davis as a partner....no.
Some say the league in this day and age would not allow the move all the way to LA. Would the courts actually prevent a privately owned team from moving? I don't think that would be constitutional and if the Niners back up a fleet of moving vans in the middle of the night...we have a convoy.
So, it wouldn't surprise me much if the Niners went south on us, far south, but I really think they will end up in Santa Clara. Young Jeb, no longer playing Boy GM and hanging black velvet posters of Mike Singletary on his wall, supposedly is now concentrating on the stadium issue.
We will see.
