Losing data and contacts

Does anyone know how to save your phone's contacts, calls, data, etc.., so that I can reload after I restore my phone back to new like status? I have been instructed to restore my phone and choose the "like new" option and this may fix my wifi issue, but when I did that, I lost all my data and the only way I new to get it all back was to restore from back-up. Any help here?
