My Iphone 6 has been turned into an Iturd with ios11 (which is apples vista) and now my mac mini is freezing after I installed the latest update. It just freezes and after 1 or 2 minutes I get the reboot. Cant they get anything right these days. My apple watch doesnt unlock my mac anymore, been like that for over 4 or 5 month and now it doesnt even try. They are turning into microsoft is my fear and where do you go? Very concerning.

you do know that not everyone is having these issues? and that they're unrelated? ios 11 is great here; not sure what's up with the mini, or you watch... but call apple! get some help with these things; much better than just complaining.

just my thoughts, of course....

What an original thread. I'm sure a search would have turned up no similar threads. M$ is thata way.

IOS11 works great on all of my devices and my Mini 2012 is running just fine with the latest updates. Maybe your problems are elsewhere? Good luck.

To be completely fair, I have the same issues. My mac before high sierra was a joke. It's a 2012 rMBP and it was made worse by Sierra, then made nearly into a brick by High Sierra. Thankfully, a full clean install did the trick and High Sierra is now "manageable" for me. It isn't perfect, there's a lot of weird glitches, but everything seems to work "ok" (stressing the quotes). I feel your pain. My iPhone 6 was turned into the slowest device I had ever seen by iOS 11. I have been so pissed off at Apple lately for letting me upgrade to an OS that wasn't meant for my devices. Upgrading to the iPhone X was what really saved me from insanity because my 6 made me want to kill myself or shoot the phone repeatedly when I used it. Also, I don't use my mac much anymore because my Windows gaming PC handles most of my daily needs. I REALLY prefer macOS when it works, but I can't stand using it as my main OS. I've been holding off an upgrade until the 2018 MBP comes out. The 2016 version was ****, the 2017 version was the same. With Apple finally listening to more pro non-fashion oriented users, I'm really hoping for a good MBP come 2018. Ive even said that Apple has listened to the MBP complaints, so I'm very hopeful. My MBP will almost be 6 years old if they announce it in the spring. I have my fingers crossed.

Edit: TBH the only thing they've made better using software has been my watch. WatchOS 3 was amazing in terms of speed for the series 0. At least I think it was WatchOS 3. Also, my iPad Pro (the original) while insanely glitchy when taking notes with apple pencil after iOS 11, has gotten better in other ways via software, so there's that. It just seems like Apple doesn't seem to care about older devices anymore. If a product is old they'd rather it get the new features rather than just exempting it from the list of products that can get the update. I for one would rather not get the new features if it meant that my phone worked. And everyone I know with an iPhone 6 or 6s would say the same. iOS11 did not bring enough cool stuff to warrant bricking every 6 model phone. I know some people don't have issues, but everyone I know with a 6 or 6S has an extremely laggy and slow phone right now and doesn't know how to fix it.

I sell mobiles for a living, so while i know some people have no issues, I see from colleagues and customers the problems 11 has caused. So while there are a few lucky ones, from what I see on a daily basis you are a lucky few. Many people are coming in and switching to samsung because they felt let down by apple. While complaining doesnt solve the problem, it helps to let it out :p. My apple products add up to a lot of money and I sure can stop giving apple my money.

ps, great post reasonable one thanks, I will just lose too much by a clean install. I have a virtual windows machine that I just cant lose what on there. Months it would take me to set it up the way I need it too.

It was working fine till the day after the last update when the freezing started. It will be something I have that you dont but I should not have to do a reinstall to find out. I posted this out of my frustration with many of my devices have issues. Cheers for the reply

While I've seen many reports here on MR about how bad iOS11 is, it works well on my iPhone 7+ and my iPad Pro 10.5". My wife uses it on her iPhone 5s. There are still some teething pains with iOS11, but this was the case with most new versions of iOS, I think.

High Sierra is another story. I just refuse to switch and being forced to a new file system that breaks many things (Bootcamp and no Windows drivers for APFS). In the past I had a bad experience with Yosemite on my iMac. It broke my Paralles VM by cutting the performance considerably.

In contrast to you, I have not lost my faith in Apple, but some times it is better to wait out things like High Sierra and APFS. Interestingly, APFS is in place on iOS since several versions and there I didn't suffer from any problems.

It will be very interesting in what direction Apple will go in the future! For now, there are still no good alternatives. I only use Windows because I'm forced to for work.

I agree there is no place to go, I will give them time to sort it out. Im testing my mac without using parallels cause maybe thats causing the freezing after the update. I'll try uninstalling a few apps if its not parallels. Cheers

Parallels 12 is running fine on my Mac Mini 2012 with High Sierra 10.13.2 . I haven't experienced noticeable slow downs, major glitches, etc.. compared to Sierra 10.12.6 . I haven't tried Parallels 13 because I upgrade it every other year.

What you might consider if you already haven't done so (for 2012 or earlier Minis) is upgrade your RAM to 16GB. 8GB or less system RAM really limits your VM productivity. VMs like Parallels like to have more available RAM. You can also trying going into the Parallels settings and increase the amount of system RAM dedicated to the virtual machine you are running. I use 3GB for Win XP and a minimum of 4GB for Win 7 or later.

To the OP, I have been feeling this way about Apple for the last couple years for the reasons you said, and many others. Apple products no longer "just work". I feel like every years, Apple is becoming more and more like Microsoft was in the early 2000's.

I am now scared to do updates. I updated my iPad Mini 2 from iOS 8 to iOS 9 (or maybe 9 to 10), and it made the device almost unusable. A few updates after that led to slight improvements, but not anywhere close to how well it performed prior to the update.

Another change that I have noticed about Apple products in general, is the user friendliness of them has gone down. It seems like I am constantly having to look up how to do simple tasks on their devices. Tasks that were very easy and straight forward before, are not requiring a google search to figure out how to do them.

The intuitiveness of Apple software is not there anymore.

I could probably fill a whole thread page of Apple changes that bother me....

I still think that Apple makes good products and software compared to the competition, but the difference in quality between them and the competition is not big as it once was.

One big change that I have noticed about Apple products, is that the huge amount of inconsistency of user experiences. In seems for every post saying their device is great on (fill in the update), there are just as many of people saying they have problems. And it would make sense if it was consistent with a particular device, but people with the same devices are having two very different experiences.

but call apple! get some help with these things

In the past 3ish years, I have spent more time talking to Apple Support about various Apple product issues than I have the previous 20 years of using Apple products. Problems happen so often now, that if I would call Apple, or go to an Apple store for every issues, it would take up a very significant amount of my time.

Sounds like it's time for you to move onto products you enjoy using.

maybe you missed this part:

I will say that I have been slowly preparing myself to step out of apple's ecosystem.

For example, I have been a long time iTunes user, but I recently switched to using plea which is offered on more platforms. I started using Pandora. The last new max I bought was a maxed out Late 2012 iMac, and I probably won't buy another any time soon.

I have been using Apple products for over two decades, and it will be hard to fully leave the Apple ecosystem, but I have been giving it a lot more thought lately.

Good Idea, I have 16gb and will give increasing the Ram a go, sitting at 4 at the moment but ill put that up and see if that makes a difference.

I totally agree with you, I went to apple in 2011 after building my own gaming rigs for years and after finally having enough of Mircosoft I jumped to apple for an easy life. That was Steve Jobs genius making products just works easily for the average consumer. Been having buggy issues sine the 2016 Macos update, but before then never really much of a problem. Very rarely did i suffer a crash since I bought my second mac mini in 14. its a very worrying trend at the moment but hopefully with the move to the new HQ they can focus on getting back to the apple we all love.

Or maybe it is time for Apple to take a step back, really take a look at what is happening, and see what they can do to improve the experience.

They make awesome products that millions of people get enjoyment from and find easy and pleasant to use. They are the most successful company in the history of the world. I personally use an iPhone x2, iPad x2, MacBook Air and Mac Mini -they all work flawlessly with the latest updates - I couldn't be more thrilled. In my view Apple should keep doing exactly what they are doing and you might consider what you can do to improve your experience. Cheers.

Then you are among the luckiest of the lucky.
Enjoy.

Seriously?
Basically an opinion piece because it makes lots of money,
Several of the “claims” are ludicrous at best. I mean, come on - solved the China problem?

How about a real fact driven support? ;)

Why? You've already made up your mind and have rejected the objective facts offered to you, in fiscal year 2016 Apple sold 211.88 million iPhones. People love these things. If you don't, feel free to use whatever you like.

A few things related to this.
High sales/revenue doesn't necessarily equal a good thing for the consumer. Being the most successful company ever(based off of objective or subjective metrics) doesn't necessarily equal a good thing for the consumer.

Many of the definitions of a successful company could be use to describe Microsoft from the late 90's into the 2000's. Again, that doesn't mean that their products had great user experiences, that just mean they were successful as a business.

This is just my opinion, but I think Apple products had a lot better user experience when they sold zero iPhone, than when they sold 211.88 million of them.

Chuckle. Pull out a subset of a set and claim it proves Y”. That proves a whole lot of not much.
Want numbers? Try these.

I am now scared to do updates.

My only reason to not do these anymore is because apps will break, and all alternative solutions for me are rubbish..

If you like your apps, their is no one forcing anyone to update of u don't want to.

Apple's forced me to keep my iPhone 6s Plus alive with an outdated OS, by not allowing older apps to work with iOS11.

I understand your frustration OP. My iPhone 6S+ has recently been swapped for a Samsung S8 which i'm very happy with. The IP6S+ had been driving me mad even before IOS11 with wifi drop outs, bluetooth drop outs and frequent crashes, fresh installs didn't work and IOS11 only made things worse. I've gradually been moving away from Apple apps and into 3rd party ones for music, email etc and i now use the Chrome browser for lots of things on my RMBP where normally i'd use the Apple program and i'm more than happy.

As others have said i was nervous about updating to the latest software. I'm still on a 2015 RMBP and every time the HS update flashes up it fills me with dread, when once upon a time i looked forward to the new OS/updates etc.

Windows is not an avenue i want to explore, but with other products i've stopped just looking at the Apple products like i used to. Items like the homepod and TV have no appeal to me when companies such as Sonos and Roku make such great products. When this moviesanywhere hits the UK (if it does) and i can move my purchased videos i think i'll be done with iTunes for good.

I will just lose too much by a clean install. I have a virtual windows machine that I just cant lose what on there. Months it would take me to set it up the way I need it too.

You could always do a full backup beforehand
