It seems that new iDevice owners that have a .mac email address are being forced to use .me on those devices.

I forget where I read this but it seems new to 4.2 that if you set up a new mobile me account on your iPAd (even if you were not new to mobile me), it defaults to .me and there's no way to change it.

So if this pans out to be true (I'll test this on my brand new iPad when I get home from work).

What do you folks who still have .mac email addresses think of this. The day may be coming when apple drops .mac and makes everyone go to .me.

I've had my .mac account since apple provided the free for life iTools and the mac email address. Since going to mobile me and .me email address, I've always wondered if apple would kill off .mac email address.

I sure hope Apple doesn't kill off the .mac addresses. I like mine and I don't want to use the .me address. The .me seems way to narcissistic to me.

I have been using mac.com since iTools days as well, so if this becomes official policy and I will no longer be able to use my @mac.com address I will say goodbye to MobileMe.

Agreed, this has been the only major reason why I continue to pay for mobile me.

While there appears to be a work around on the ipad/iPhones, I would hate to see this become the policy.

The work around as far as I understand it is, to step up the email account as a normal IMAP account setting the proper smtp mail settings.

I am confused, .me: on my iPhone (running 4.2.1) everything still says @mac.com, and messages are still sent from .mac.com. Does it only change if you acquire a new iTing™ after 4.2.1?

I think it's if you set up your MobileMe after upgrading to 4.2, it doesn't let you use @mac.com as your email address unless you use the workaround.

If your @mac.com email was set up and working before upgrading to 4.2 you shouldn't have a problem.

That's what I understand but I just bought an iPad, so I don't think I have any choice, and I'll be getting the iPhone 5, so again, I'm out of luck if things don't change :(

Sorry for the pedantry, but it's correctly called MobileMe (not .me, and it has nothing to do with the .me domain name).

    INCORRECT:
    .itools
    .me
    .mobileme
    mobile.me

    CORRECT:
    iTools (former name)
    .Mac (former name)
    MobileMe

Have you managed to get your @mac.com email working yet?

Not yet, I think I might have missed a step or did something wrong with that work around.

I think it has to do with these steps.

So much for "It just works".

    That is correct.

    That makes two of us.
I can see some trouble ahead when I buy iPad 2 and a new iPhone sometime this year.

    Really, really?

I am .mac from way, way back... Lets examine the difference between the two:

    .mac versus .me...

The M's are the same. Only the AC and E are different... Really...

If this is all we have to worry about in life, we are blessed...

    Im just sayin...

They used too, but since going to .me that option is no longer available.
