ny somewhere
before messages where stored in the cloud, if i accidentally deleted a thread, with the next text to (or from) that person, the previous history returned.

today (storing in icloud), a new message from someone i deleted this morning does NOT show the previous texts.

any way to retrieve them? otherwise, whats the point of the icloud sync? all this worked fine before...
[doublepost=1499976206][/doublepost]anyway, i just disabled 'store in icloud' on my mac & iphone (eating up a lot of my storage). am not seeing the point of this...? my messages are always in sync on both devices, what's the value in the new option?

hi
i am not on the beta. so i don't have the info you are seeking.
but i have been curious about this as well, since i see elsewhere similar reports.
may i ask "how" you deleted the "message" ?
are you:
1 right clicking on the thread and "closing" the thread
2 right clicking on the thread and "deleting" the thread
3 clicking on the thread box X mark to make the thread go away?
4 right clicking on a single message and deleting that 1 message?
thanks

I have no answer for you main question about the deleted messages, but before storing messages in iCloud I think it wasn't possible getting (back) old messages from Apple's servers on a Mac. It only worked on iOS.

When I deleted a conversation I could just create a new one for the same contact and scroll years back even on an iPhone set up as new without restoring a backup. On a Mac I was only able to save the messages history locally.

Also I am not sure if this worked on any device for SMS too. I think only iMessages were stored on Apple's servers.

i dunno, but i have, a couple of times (!), gone to sleep my mac (command-opton-power), and instead hit the 'delete' key... when messages was the frontmost app. voilá! thread deleted.

previously, when this happened (and also with some threads i chose to delete clicking the 'x" by the person's name), when i next texted them (or got a text), the entire thread was back. now, even without the cloud backup, the previous messages are gone. ugh....

Yes, if this is enabled:

Nothing should get lost. But it is only stored locally and it's only for Messages that already arrived on the Mac before. There never had been a real sync to iDevices.

Now with iCloud sync the messages should come back by scrolling up like on the phone even without saving history enabled. But it seems to be very buggy yet.

It took me a long time to even figure out how to enable "Messages on iCloud", it was greyed out everywhere until I did something I can't remember.

Edit: Do you use a device that doesn't support iCloud Messages? I turned of my 4s a while ago, what might have been the solution it wasn't greyed out anymore.

that's checked (and has always been checked). and i only use a new macbook, and an iphone SE. am assuming the problem is that i enabled icloud backup, then shortly after, disabled it.

will be more careful from now on...
