Gday gday,

I'm thinking of updating my os from 10.3.9, up to tiger 10.4
My concern is, as I've lost a couple of my original discs for some software apps, will these be lost if i upgrade the OS?
These software apps are imperative to my work, and cost a s***load of money, so i'd really prefer not to go and buy them again.
Will they stay on the system, or will they be deleted when i update?

If anyone can help, thatd be fantastic!

Can you list the apps in question? Most applications are self-contained, so providing you do the Archive and Install option for the upgrade everything for them should be fine. However, there are others where they will leave files in the Startup Items or system Library folders. The Archive and Install option does create a "Previous System" folder so the files are not completely lost, but you don't want to go poking around in there unless you're confident of what you're doing.

Post the list, and hopefully if I can't tell you myself others here will be able to.

In general everything that works in 10.3.9 will work in 10.4 just fine. Photoshop, Office, Adobe products. However, you should still check each application. Go to the vendor's web site and see if they say what version of OS X it works for.

Archive and Install is your friend.

On another note, how could you have possibly lost the install disks for applications that are "critical" to your work? Isn't that something you make copies of?

DVD Studio Pro 3. my question was not whether or not it would run on 10.4, but if it would be lost.

The disc was loaned to an old colleague with a bunch of stuff and this one never made it back.

I originally did not make back up discs BECAUSE I DONT RUN "BACK-UPS" COS EVERYTHINGS PIRATED THESE DAYS. DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THAT IF I ASK APPLE FOR ANOTHER DISC, INSTEAD OF USING MY BACKUP, WITH NO REAL PROOF OF PURCHASE, THEY'D BUY THAT????

I have no idea what you are trying to say here.

If you do an archive and install, all your applications will be left intact.
