4.0 software is beyond terrible so I wanted to go back to 3.1.3.
3G on at&t btw..

followed these instructions to the letter....backed up just as it says in the first steps...

http://iphonetouch.blorge.com/2010/06/28/how-to-re-install-iphone-os-3-1-3/

when bringing it back up, I got ‘the version is too old for the restore’ error, so I had to restore as new iphone....

I have apps and music but contacts, bookmarks and photos are gone.

I tried to choose a different 'back-up from restore' but the only back-ups shown are after the data loss.

anyway to recover?? I'm in need of help...thanks!!

I've read how to go back to 3.1 enough times to recite it- but haven't done it yet for this reason. I don't know how on a PC you can load an earlier backup (pre iOS4)

I did back up...before I went thru the process...

what doesn't make sense to me is where did the data go? (using an imac not pc)

luckily I found many contacts in my old phone, but I still lost some things.
