I've lost the discs for my macbook 3.1 osx 10.5.8 and have no back up.
    What can I do.
A friend gave me the discs for his mac after it was stolen but the discs are osx 10.6

Those grey Restore DVDs your friend gave you will not work on any other model than they came with, thus you are left with either paying 19 USD on the Apple Online Store for the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD (without iLife) and buying iMovie, iPhoto and Garage Band via the Mac App Store (MAS) if you need them (iDVD and iWeb are not available anymore) or getting a used iLife DVD from eBay or Amazon, or you could contact Apple and ask for the Restore DVDs for your specific Mac and they send them to you for a fee of 15 to 30 USD.

Buy new discs; start backing up.
