My Google Earth died, and to get another version it says to download it thru Chrome. Do I want to do this? Thanks.

I don't believe there is any download anymore, it's simply accessed through google.com/earth. The only way to get a local installer is to use the "Older versions" link at the top of that page, indicating to me that local installs are no longer going to be provided.

My last version has also stopped working properly but I just downloaded the most recent desktop version from that site, I'll see how it goes...

Google Earth Pro was just updated to version 7.3 only a few weeks ago.
I use the web version with Chrome, and that works very well, but the desktop version (which, IIRC, is now the Google Earth Pro version) certainly works for me.
Not sure what @hallux was referring to. The Google Earth app is no longer available, but Google Earth Pro certainly is.
Google updated that desktop version only 2 or 3 weeks ago to version 7.3
Pro version used to be "suggested" as a paid version, but provided free for the last couple of years. It now seems to be the only desktop version. (the web version, which works very nicely in Chrome, is much faster than the desktop version, IMHO.)

No. Yes.

GE is now a web-based "app" that's pretty much identical to the Android and iOS app, a wrapper for cloud services. To me, it's pretty to look at and pretty useless. That's the "no".

Here's the "yes". The GE app client no longer "exists". GE Pro and GE have been merged into one new app that is named Google Earth Pro (it's a GE client app) - there are many new features and optimizations on both the Windows and Mac OS. The new client app version no longer needs a serial number - and there are changes:
