It was a mild night in New York City. Tourists crowded the sidewalks chatting with excitement about the Broadway plays they'd just attended. Frustrated natives whisked by them. Me. Why was I there? A friend had a birthday party in the area. It was across the street from where I used to work -- so the Google map showed. I had my iPhone and iPad out, but with such a large crowd after 10pm, I was more comfortable referring to my iPhone for directions. After all, its novelty has weaned. I wouldn't draw attention to myself for using an iPhone.

After attempting to pull up the address on the iPhone for about 10 minutes, I reluctantly opened the previously concealed iPad case, revealing the new, expensive, popular gadget, but for a minute. I quickly dialed in the name of the venue, it came up immediately on the 3G connection, and I proceeded to attempt to find it again.

After closing the iPad case, I looked around. Who saw me? No one noticed. They were all in their own worlds, in the middle of Manhattan, on a Friday night. They were busy catching cabs and keeping up with friends. Good.

After going in circles, I called the venue only to learn that the Google maps address was wrong. I was a block away.

What a night. LOST in Manhattan...

Do people usually look at you when you pull out the iPad? I didn't think it was that big of a deal to people!

Regardless, I tried the GPS on the 3G iPad, and I feel like for some reason, it is A LOT better than the my 3Gs' gps.. thank god

I can't pull out my iPad without at least one person coming up to me, "Ohhh, can I touch it, it's soooo cool!." One girl actually Tweeted that she finally saw an iPad in the wild. Yep, the iPad is a chick magnet.

I showed it to my little sister, who's not really into gadgets, thinking she'd act polite for 5 minutes. It took me an hour to get it out of her hands and we ended up both trying to work the touchscreen at the same time and slapping at each other's hands :) (She's 27, lest you think I'm talking about a tweener or something)

We went out for dinner Thursday night and my wife brought her iPad with her. The waiter was enthralled with it - first time he had ever seen one!

Same here. Even when I walk the streets with my iPad up in the air and shout "I've got an iPad, peoples, I've got an iPad!", still no reaction from anyone. None. Nada. Zero. Nil. Naught. Zilch. Nix. Zip. Diddly-squat.

So you're saying you got AT&T service on the iPad but not the iPhone? I don't get the 10 unsuccessful minutes otherwise...

Your in NY. I live in NY too and I would careless if you had an Ipad. Great story but it doesn't surprise me that people didn't notice.
