My iPhone X went into the water in an unretrievable spot. So I now need a new phone and am not yet decided whether it will be a refurb 6 or an 8. But it sure will not be another iPhone X.

Here are my personal reasons

- Camera is about the same on all (X has better zoom and that silly portrait thing I never seriously used). So no need for the iPhone X.

- 6 and 8 are just that bit smaller that means that my fingers actually wrap around the iPhone. On the X the tiny difference made a difference and my hold of the iPhone X was not good. Actually this is the cause of the water dive for the X.

- My previous iPhone was a 6 and even after 4 years of hammering the screen was perfect. On the X after 2 months the screen already had a visible scratch. Actually the dual glass on the X meant I was ever confused on which side was top/bottom/front/back.

- Face id never really worked. At night, or when wearing hat, or after a shower it just did not work. So I passed more time entering my code than before. Actually some features of iOS are clearly not set for Face id as they ask for the code anyway so what's the use of Face id?

- The screen quality is worst for iPhone 6/8 but honestly for my eyes (I'm oldish) and my use (no games) I really don't care for the edge to edge.

- Edge to Edge screen caused me hassle as how I hold the phone means my holding hand wILL actually touch the gesture part of the screen. THIS WILL Cause iOS to ignore the command gestures the other hand was making. A real nuisance.

Its the first time I regret the purchase of a flagship Apple product, actually in this case I would actually say the loss of the iPhone X is somewhere a relief.

I'm giving myself a few days prior to shopping for my downgrade iPhone, and if anyone can convince me of the opposite I will listen listen if they dramatically overshadow my points above

I agree, but I could trade in my case dented 6 for a refurb. Apple store said they would do this rather than repair the case. It would dramatically cut my costs for something close to new.

I would say getting a 6 (RAM/battery) would be the last choice I would make
If you are balancing cost with feature set unique to you, the 7 is the logical choice

If you want to trade in the damaged 6 for a refurb and then sell it you could offset the cost of the 7
But coming from a X to a 6 would be a difficult adjustment (for me)

I'd personally find it difficult to go back to a different model. Using my friends' 6 & 6+ after the X just looks and feels... antiquated.

I agree with this. After using the X for a week I don't think I could ever go back to the home buttoned iPhones.

The iPhone 6 is not a good choice at this point with 1 GB of Ram. If it was me, I would still consider an iPhone 8, which at least will be somewhat cheaper and has similar internals for the iPhone X. Otherwise the bare minimum would be the iPhone 7. However if your finances allows it, then of course the iPhone X would likely be a great choice as well.

I always keep my previous iPhone as a backup when I purchase a new one. If something horrible happened to my X, my 6S would go back into service until I decided what to do. That be said, the iPhone 6 was the only iPhone I got rid of two months after purchase. It offered no improvement to my 5S as far as performance and was a big disappointment. The 6S was night and day difference to the 6 and was a wonderful phone until I got my X. If I had no backup, I’d go for a 7.

My daughter had a screen problem with her 6 and Apple replaced it with a 6s.

Urinal or sit-down toilet? Hmmm.... disgusting as it would be, id probably reach in there and then wash the heck out of it. Oh wait... porta John? Outhouse? Yeah... I’d let it go and call it a $1,000 lesson to keep my iPhone in my front pant pocket when nature calls.

I'd never ever go for anything other than an iPhone X. I couldn't go back after getting used to the gorgeous screen, FaceID and the new gestures.

I received an iPhone 7 at work a couple days ago and while it is a great device, the screen seems so tiny and every time I use it I have to remember that I can't do some gestures on it... the only thing I like about it is TouchID, which is still a tad more efficient than FaceID. No wonder, given the difference in maturity of both technologies.

If you can't / don't want to buy a new iPhone X, then go with a 7, it's fast and reliable and the technology is barely a year old so you're good to go for a while. But this depends on what you do with your iPhone of course, if it's just for phone/messaging/checking e-mails and surfing the web once in a while, an iPhone 6 will do. Friend of mine has her 6 running on iOS 10.3.2, works like a charm.

Using the home button on my business 8+ line feels archaic, I don't think I could go back full time to last gen tech.

Could also be a large water body - into a lake or into the sea in deep water?

Could be. To paraphrase Cap’n Quint from Jaws:

“Your iPhone go into the water? You go in the water? Shark's in the water? Our shark? [singing] Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again.”

My favorite iphone that I have ever had was the iphone 6s+ - I hate my iphone 7, I am just not a huge fan of the no headphone jack.
I am trying to get rid of my 7+ for another 6s+ lol

I’ve not had any of the problems that the OP has listed, and I really like the Face ID, and the camera especially the portrait mode. Also the X has Image Stabilization on both the normal and the telephoto lenses—something neither of the other iPhones have. So if I would not hesitate to replace it with another X. If I had to do it after the newly rumored iPhone X+ comes out then that would be my choice.

in a river...

in a river...

That’s a bummer. I once dropped a camera into saltwater. I was able to retrieve it, but the saltwater ended it. Fortunately it wasn’t even my good camera (I wouldn’t have taken that one sea kayaking). It wasn’t worth nearly as much as an iPhone X.

I’d replace my X with another X as long as I could afford to do so. Just one of those unfortunate accidents, like the time our dog dragged a flourless chocolate cake off the counter and spent several days in the pet hospital. We now refer to that as the $3000 chocolate cake. It’s hard not beat yourself up about stuff like this, but accidents happen. Hopefully not too often.

It’s intereting, because the 6S Plus is extremely popular right due to the battery replacement. If it’s in good condition, they have increased in value when I last checked Swappa.
