Suuure.

I live in tempe... work in AZ mills mall. Do you think you could fix it without losing all the Data? How much would you charge?

I have the means to "fix" it, yes. I'd be happy to look over it for you.

I'm asking if you own it because you don't seem to have the DVDs, which seems suspicious.

In another thread he stated he bought the computer, but it is probably stolen.

All the time people sell computers without disks on Craigslist, and he probably bought it.

I don't know about you, but a lot of people have a hard time finding DVDs that they unpacked a long time ago.

Don't jump to conclusions.

I bought it off craigslist, its the first mac I have really owned/ used so I didn't really know much about the comp. I paid 600 for it. I am told its decent but when I try to download stuff it says I need an admin password. But ya. Either I can get past it or I have to spend 129.99 on new OS.

yep

And that's why I asked.

Unless that thing has dents, scratches or cracks on the screen you got it for a price that's near impossible to find anywhere for a MBP. Even if you got the first MBP that came out you certainly got a really great deal.
Check Apple's online store, you'll see. Even if you manage to find a solution without the restore disc (good luck) you still need a restore disc and it's still best to wipe the drive clean of the original owners stuff and start fresh so you won't end up with issues with software upgrades and such.
If all you spent was $600 then wait till Tuesday and just go buy a copy of Leopard.

P.S. based on the price you got off Craigslist for I wouldn't register it...

NOT jumping to any conclusions except for the fact the OP mentioned the computer was probably stolen. He did say he bought it, but it was probably a stolen computer. What would you conclude from that?

Huh?

Well, if you take the hypotenuse of the complementary angle, you get the sin of the Nth degree. Take the derivative of that and you have your answer.

I'm really upset about this. I was told there was going to be no math.

Procedure Works

One small caveat. First command after single user boot was incomplete. See below:

Hold down command-s while booting to boot to single use mode, mount the drive by typing: (User input is after ">")

>/sbin/mount -uw /

Get short username by typing:

>launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
>ls /Users

Look at the listing and note the short name (username) of the affected user account.
Delete password file for identified user by typing this: (replace #username# with short name listed in step above)

>dscl . -delete /Users/#username# AuthenticationAuthority

Set new password. (replace #password# with desired password)

>passwd #username#

New password > #password#
Retype new password > #password#

Restart machine

>reboot

lost password on macbook pro... the Mac OS X cd isnt working plz!! help me

i forgot my macbooks password.. and ive been trying to use the mac os x cd for almost a week now, but when the screen is supposed to turn blue offering an option of languages (as ive been told over the phone by an apple employee) it just turns black and stays that way :S
will someone please help me :) :)

thanks !

Ok, this is what I did. My ex boyfriend changed the password on my iMac (it's a long story, he's a jerkoff, hence why he is an "ex" anyway, the computer was at his house and I had just gotten it back) So I could not get passed the login window unless I knew his password. It sounds like you don't want to do the terminal/single user mode thing like a few people have explained.

The ONLY way to get around this is by BUYING A LEOPARD DISK. I already had the install disks that came with the iMac. Insert the disk, turn on the computer, hold down the C button BEFORE the sound of the chime. It will then take you to the install screen. Make sure you choose the optional install or something like that and make sure you check "delete and install"

If you bought it from someone else, you should probably reinstall the OS anyway because it probably has their files inside of it. If you have any more questions, you can always call 1800-MY-APPLE Hope this helps. Take care.

If this doesn't work, it will either be in a restart loop (it will keep restarting and restarting) or like the above person said, the screen will be black, that means that the system was released with the same OS that the disk is. Like if you're using a system released with leopard, you cannot use a leopard install disk, you need the EXACT SAME install disk that CAME WITH THE COMPUTER. You can use a snow leopard disk though. Anyway, To get these disks (the ones that shipped with your specific system), you need to call apple with the number I gave, give them the serial number, and buy the original install disks. For example, my iMac shipped with leopard 10.5. The install disks have 10.5 on them. One time I reformatted and wanted to reinstall the os. At first I used the leopard disk (I have a leopard disk because my macbook shipped with tiger and I wanted leopard for it, in that case, I CAN use the leopard disk for my macbook rather than the install disks that came with it) but my iMac was in a continuous restarting loop. To combat this, I had to (I don't quite remember what I did to get it out of this) either hold down the eject key to eject the disk, or hold the power button to do a force power off, just try either or, one should work. Afterwards, I used the install disk that CAME WITH the iMac, and it worked as normal, taking me to the "choose the language" screen and starting the process of installing the OS.

Aside from this, as for the macbook pro that was purchased for 600 bucks, actually, if it was a 2006 model, I can see someone who doesn't understand mac resale value selling it for that much. It would be the lowest end model and very first model of mbp probably.

it can be done without the disc. hold down command-s while booting to boot to single use mode, mount the drive by typing mount -uw / (hit return) and then follow this

Type this:
launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
Press Return
Type this, then press Return: ls /Users
Look at the listing and note the short name (username) of the affected user account.
Type this:

dscl . -delete /Users/username AuthenticationAuthority

Note: Replace "username" with the affected user account's short name you noted above.
Press Return
Type this, followed by Return: passwd username

Note: Replace "username" with the affected user account's short name you noted above.
At the "New password:" prompt, type the user's password, then Return. Note: It is recommended that the original user's password be used to match the keychain password.
At the "Retype new password" prompt, type the same password, followed by Return.
Type this, followed by Return: reboot

i tried doing this, and it doesn't do anything when i press command-s is there a specific time during the boot up that i should press it?

Keyboard can not type after reboot

I have deleted the 2 admin passwords with the commands, but if I reboot to create new account the keyboard will stop typing again. The keys work on single mode but can not work when i start the system.
Have I deleted a wrong file?I use the white macbook. HELP
