lost triple click dim

as Apple decided to use triple click for something else. I set the accessibility shortcut off but I cannot seem to get back to dim mode.

suggestions? (night shift is not a good replacement)
 
The option for it is still there--it doesn't seem like Apple took over it or anything like that.
 
Well I went and did more reading, apparently the method I used before is not 100% like the current method but I did get it back
