Or you could just use google voice for the past few years its been doing that.

Yup. My jaw dropped when I opened up Reeder on my iPhone this morning while sitting on the pot (ok maybe too much info there). I cannot wait till the Mountain to be released. Although, I find the Lion in their picture to be quite naked.

Only works from one Apple product to another.
GTalk works with pretty much anything, including Apple products. ;)
Not really. It integrates with ichat (aim) and facetime on the mac. So your AIM/ichat buddies etc are all there as well. and on your iphone it's imessage to sms. And for me: whose appleiD IS their primary email, it's ONE means of contact for everything (and importantly, is google free).

You're completely missing the point. GTalk requires both users to be logged into their system. With iMessage, you KNOW you can reach a person no matter where they are b/c it always will go to their mobile device if they're not at the computer. If you and a friend/colleague both have an iPhone, there is no better way to communicate. With ALL other IM services, users can log in or log out and even when they're logged in, there is no confirmation that they're at their computer and they received the message.

I know it's still beta but what really impressed me was when I received a message on the phone and then OPENED my laptop and once it connected to wifi the message popped up there too.

Yes it has. There's a lot of advantages to Google Voice, as well as the convenience of user controls far beyond what any other company offers.

The possible uses are nearly endless. I've been enjoying it for over two years and it's incredibly reliable.
