iPod touch Low cost iPod touch signaling low cost iPhone?

Today, Apple made a sudden announcement that the ipod touch 5th gen line. Unlike in the past lower capacity models, the 16 GB 5 is also missing a few other features from the higher end model, like the back camera. Apple isnt releasing a 16 GB ipod touch 5, they are releasing a low cost ipod touch. With this, does it seem more likely that apple will release a low cost iphone?

I dont think it signal anything. Maybe Ipod touch 5 is finding it harder to sell since the release of ipad mini. Cook is master at supply chain so maybe there is left over components to make the touch 5 which he can't return to suppliers so there goes the 16GB without camera. The isight 5mp might not allow them to price at 229 without significant margin.

Well, Jobs wouldn't do anything silly like this to jeopardize the brand image but he is gone so.. as apple stock value.

quite possible that a low cost iPhone would only be sold in developing countries, not in the U.S. or EU, or Canada.

Nah, I think they made the low cost 5th gen because the 4th gen was selling to many.

The specs and price for the low-cost iPhone don't match up!

Way too good to be sold for <$400, ESPECIALLY since it's an Apple device.

Maybe an Android, but an iPhone with those specs wouldn't sell for that low.

In the USA, most of the cost is not the phone but the contract. What good is reducing the price of the phone from $600 to $300 if you pay $100 a month for the contract? In the UK, if you buy an iPhone 5 with 24 month contract, 2/3rds of the cost is for the phone, 1/3rd for the service. A cheaper phone would make a _huge_ difference to the cost.
