Does this still include fall protection? Would love to buy this for my mother who is recovering from double knee surgery
Yes.

Fall detection and Emergency SOS.

With its built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, Apple Watch SE can detect if you’ve taken a hard fall and connect you with emergency services if you’re immobile.5 You can also get immediate help in an emergency — even when you’re traveling internationally — by simply pressing and holding the side button.6

What does SE stand for again?
At some point SE was meant as Special Edition, but it seems like that wasn't really something associated with it after some time, so it can be that or basically nothing in particular aside from just "SE" at this point.

Wow with the same battery and chip from the series 5 (plus the energy saving features of watchOS 7) but lacking the always on display... the battery life might be incredible on this SE model.

The SE won me over. I really thought about the 6, but it came out to $120 more that I couldn’t justify (let alone afford). The s5 chip and battery sealed my decision. I am looking forward to a AW again; I had the series “0” that broke almost 3 years ago.

Was hoping for an even more basic model with no health features and all week battery life for $99.
S-o... A watch, or rather a watch with messaging and weather? I don’t recall if the cheap Garmin models even forego the health features and stick to strictly geo tracking.

Does such a product exist, from any company?

Since the S3 Apple watch is $169 at most places thought about getting that one. But while the SE is more expensive, I think I am leaning towards getting it now as my first Apple watch. I like the faster processor and the Fall Detection feature (hey, I ain't getting any younger!).

And it should get updates longer as well. Really tempting.

I just got the SE. I've been eyeing a new watch since last November when the series 3 went on sale for $129 for Black Friday. That $279 pricepoint sounded really fair. My initial reaction was negative towards it (I was hoping for $199 for the S4 or S5), but really... the $279 seems really fair considering the series 5 was JUST on sale for $299 at a lot of places. I'm happy.

I've had the series 0 since almost launch day, and it's held up remarkably well, even without the latest updates!

The SE made the decision super easy since I felt I missed out (a little) on the sales from earlier this year on the series 5, and I want the 40mm design (of the S4/5/6) not the old 38mm of the S0/1/2/3)

I only like the watch for the OS benefits (many, many of them), and the fitness tracking... so I'm not interested in EKG or the blood oxygen tracking (not for $399 anyways). And the series 0 is slow sometimes opening the fitness app, so I'm concerned with the longterm life of the s3 (especially since I keep watches for... 4/5 years).

The compass is really nice for going on hikes, exploring trails, etc. so I'm looking forward to that.

And getting the dark blue band can take the place of not getting the new blue color on the s6, haha.

Edit P.s.: also, it does make me feel good to know that Apple didn't dump on people who just bought an S5 by significantly lowering the price. In other words, I'm glad that Apple didn't create buyers remorse for the people that bought an S5, by charging a much lower price on the SE.

The series 0 aluminium screen glass was indestructible, you'll be disappointed how much the newer ones scratch up so plan on faster upgrades in future.

Oh no 🤦‍♂️

I'm guessing it's because it's a newer version of gorilla glass that takes cuts easier, but is harder to shatter?

the iPhones have the same complaint these last three or so years about scratches appearing more easily.

if it wasn't for the "ancient" chip in the s0 I would just keep it. It doesn't have latest OS and is slow pulling up workouts

I actually caught myself looking at this, for whatever reason. Then, I looked at the refurbished Series 5 watches, and then, I closed the browser and walked away.

I have no need. I haven't worn a watch since 2006.
