Lower fan speed? Speedfan?

My Macbook's fan is very loud. smcfancontrol tells me that it's running at 6000rpm, and that the temperature is 57 degrees.

I never really shut it down - I put it to sleep all the time. Could this be the problem?

Also, is there a program like speedfan for os x which will allow me to lower the fan speed, rather than just set a minimum fan speed?
