    Interesting.

I tried to buy it on Amazon but it says the plans are not available in my zip code. I also did not see anything about a rebate, although maybe it did not show my this as it did not provide me a button to "buy" it (or put it in my cart).

This is my opinion on what would happen.

since your getting a new plan which is probably 2 years with amazon. When you purchase the iphone and activate it, it ask you are you an existing customer of course you'll say yes and it will probably add 2 more years. so if you have a 2 year agreement it will be for 4years.

this is what i think would happen if you try this method.

or like the article says since AT&T just requires 2 years which what you will have it will just reset the 2 years when you get the iphone. all you probly have to do is add the data plan

you might have to pay another 30+ dollars for activation fee

Because the iPhone is not subsidized, you can buy it at any time no matter where you are in your existing contract. Purchasing and activating an iPhone resets your contract back to 2 years from the date of activation. In other words, you wouldn't end up with a 4 year contract.

Be careful. This is what Amazon says:

Conditional $250 Equipment Discount Included: Your price paid includes an equipment discount of $250 that has been provided to you in exchange for either activating a new, non-substitute line of service or renewing an existing line of service with AT&T and your agreement that for the 181-day period following such activation or renewal you will: (1) pay your balance due to AT&T each month and otherwise maintain your account in good standing; (2) not disconnect this AT&T line of service; (3) not transfer this equipment to another AT&T line of service; (4) not change your AT&T service rate plan to a lower monthly service rate--this includes canceling or removing required PDA, BlackBerry, or smartphone features after your product has shipped; (5) not use this line of service to replace an existing account with AT&T. If these conditions are not met, you hereby authorize Amazon.com to charge your credit card $250 as reimbursement of this equipment discount without need for further approval.

In particular, (4). Although, this plan seems sound otherwise.

Well, it's not quite as sweet as it seems.

$100 of the mail-in rebate (from AT&T), comes in the form of a AT&T/Visa card. Yeah, it can be used anywhere, but I can't deposit it in my bank account. You'll have to wait until possibly mid-August to receive it.

The other $75 mail-in rebate (from Amazon) takes (per the rebate submission form) 12-15 weeks to process.

This is why most rebates are a come-on, designed purposely to delay, obfuscate, and frustrate.

    Pass.

Buy an AT&T phone on amazon to get some cash before iphone?

On Amazon, you can get up to about $150 rebate back on a new Cingular account/phone, depending on the phone you choose.

I wonder if I should go ahead and order one of those, and then in the next week when I get the iPhone just replace it on the line, so you can do that with the iPhone?

Would Amazon do the $250 chargeback on me? This iPhone really creates some new questions.

Thanks for your advice. Just trying to get some cash, since AT&T and Apple refuse to give us anything for a 2 year contract.

Is the $39 activation fee every time you activate a phone even if replacing an old one?

Seems like the best rebate deal is like on the krazr at $75, so if $39 of that was ate up by activation fee. Then after 6 months I could sell the krazr for a few bucks on ebay too (amazon says you can't do it sooner).

Not sure. It wouldn't make that much money.

I was thinking about doing this but this really scares me (3) not transfer this equipment to another AT&T line of service if you want to sell this. I was thinking of selling the phone a few months later accoring to this it would violate the terms?
