so the lower ram slot on my PowerBook G4 1.67 only works ocassionally. But not all the time.

Why would it do that? Is the mother board failing?
 
Its a pretty common failure in the 1.5 and 1.67 Powerbooks. It happened to mine so I had to replace the Logic Board
 
It's a BGA solder issue, a reflow may fix it. There was another thread here about using a single 2GB stick I don't remember how that worked out though

I can't find the other thread for some reason, but to reflow you would pull the logic board out and throw it in the oven for some time. Im not an expert with reflows but some others here might

Mine recently failed as well, in my 1.5ghz AL PB G4. I may give it over to my buddy who has a rework station to reflow it, but who knows when I'll get the bug to tear it apart.
