Aren’t our X’s supposed to lower the volume of notifications when it detects we are looking at the screen? I haven’t really noticed this working. It works on Facebook messenger sometimes (I think), never on anything else. Anyone know how it’s supposed to work, if there are settings to adjust, or it’s just a buggy feature? I was looking foward to this one actually.

I am on 11.2 beta 2 and I thought maybe that is the reason. The dimming works but not the alert volumes.

It’s on. I’m going to restart and see what that does but I’m thinking it’s broke.

I asked something similar. Seems as if turning down/off volume while looking at screen isn’t active yet.

For an alarm though...when it went off this morning, and as soon as I looked at the screen to hit the snooze, the volume went way down. Nice touch.

Nice. Haven’t noticed that yet. Wish text and other alerts still didn’t blast me in the face while looking at my phone and using it. Maybe next iOS 11.X update.

Beta 3 didnt solve the problem. Anyone can report that it works or not on non beta?
I know it works on the non beta software. I work at T-Mobile and it has worked on all the phones I set up for customers. It just doesn’t work on my phone running the beta.

it definitely works on non-beta 11.1.1

an easy_ish way to test it is to set a timer (Clock.app) for 5 seconds or so..
do it with and without looking at the phone.

it should be considerably quieter when you're looking at it.

I would hope for a single/double speaker option in the future for notifications.

Something like the phone can sense when it’s in a pocket or backpack and use both speakers. Or when it’s on a desk and could maybe lower the volume or use just one speaker.

It works on the 11.2 beta for alarms but not phone calls.

I got a phonecall while using the phone and it worked, maybe it isn't supposed to work with other notifications? Which would be disappointing.

I think this feature is fairly messed up or I am doing something completely wrong. I am now on 11.2 beta 5 and none of the features works except alarm one. It was definitely working on 11.1.1 but not any beta FWs and 11.1.2.

I’m on the latest public beta 11.2 and just tested with both an alarm and a timer. In both cases the volume dipped when Face ID recognised me and unlocked.

how about when the phone rings and you receive text messages while using the phone?

Timer and alarm clock works for me too. So is screen dimming but not phone calls or other messages.
