AT&T intends to overlay their 3G network with LTE by the end of 2013.

2013, wow by then the next iPad will be already out, then I'll consider buying an AT&T iPad. But for this year it's Verizon because they have better LTE coverage.

It took AT&T 1.5 years to put 3G in my city, that's why I'm not taking the chance on hoping it's coming soon. Also Im a little mad that they throttled my data the past couple of months on my unlimited plan.

...
Not hard to find. Research the FCC documents when AT&T was still trying to acquire T-Mobile, and they say the same thing. 4G LTE should be in the Top 200 markets (markets, not cities) for AT&T by the end of 2013.

And you don't think they will use the failed merger as an excuse why they don't meet that goal?

I see Verizon's network upgrading and improving in my state. I've used AT&T since the first iPhone. I still can't get a reliable AT&T signal most of the time, let alone any faster data speeds.

----------

Both overseas and domestic. The apple guy told me the best for international was at&t ? Is that old info? Will having the 2100 feq be better down the road?

The only difference is LTE bands, and I don't think LTE is supported anywhere but in North America yet. Both versions have the exact same 3G bands supported and the Verizon one has CDMA also.

Good news, Bad News

I was in the DC area today wlth my iPad and got ATT LTE speeds of 34 mps down and 16 mps uploads!!! That is as good as my FiOS wifi speeds at home!!

Now the bad news, in Pennsylvania where I live I can't seem to get ATT LTE, so this business trip was the first time I used LTE!

Nope. That plan for 97% HSPA+ coverage by the end of 2012 has been in place since 2010. The plan for 80% LTE coverage by the end of 2013 has been in place since January 2011, when they upped the completion date by 1 year because Verizon was gaining significant momentum with their own LTE network. AT&T's goal was 70 million covered by LTE by the end of 2011, which they obviously completed. Gaining 100 million more covered by the end of 2012 shouldn't be too hard.

Returning my AT&T lte for a verizon this morning. My AT&T service has done but would like something I can depend on more. Have AT&T iphine 4s so I could always tether off that if needed. Figured going with Verizon I am covering all my bases.

I had the same thought. I will keep my att. I have the vzw iPhone 4s now and when my 2years is up I will get new next model with 4g that way I will have both. Decision made. I hope. :D.

Also I have not found any flaws with this iPad yet. Thanks

Have you been unhappy with the speed on your vzw 4s? Are you wanting to go all in on AT&T?

Yes vzw on iPhone has been fine. I feel it's stronger in buildings. I would switch to vzw on iPad but I travel domestic a lot and like the thought of having both carriers. I did several speed tests with vzw 3G and iPad on AT&T 3G "4g". And AT&T was 4 to 5 times faster

Will I regret it ?? From the reviews AT&T seem like a bunch of a--holes.

Quick question: If I were to buy the 3GB of data on my Verizon iPad, and then cancel the next day, would I only have 30 days to use up the data or will I have it till I use it all?

A lot of the bad press is because of whiners that feel entitled to unlimited data with no throttling, but in general both companies are roughly equally evil. I think AT&T has a better front-end experience, as they have more corporate stores, and they seem to be a bit nicer than the Verizon ones I've been in, at least in my area, where AT&T is also the incumbent telco and tries to be a competitor in the TV market with U-Verse and DirecTV.

Too the plunge and returned my ATT for VZW. Did a quick speediest at home and pulled roughly 10mbps more than I was on the ATT. Figures since I have a ATT 4s I am well covered. If VZW proves well I will jump ship to VZW on the iPhone refresh.

Where you located? And what were your results? When you returned it did the apple folks indicate which is more popular AT&T or big red.

There comes a point in which the difference between 20 Mbs vs 50 Mbs won't affect your iPad experience. Movies won't have buffer times, web pages will load the same, and music will stream at the same quality at those speeds. What will affect the experience is coverage.

I am in Kansas City. ATT has been fairly decent for me here. We have the updated HSPA+ in most areas and when using my 4s I can tell. However, I thought this would be a good way to test vzw.

When talking to the apple specialist he had hinted that they sell more ATT at their store but with vzw network and the ability to put an att sim and use att network he would probably go vzw as well.

Vzw slower in dc

Ok so I have tried both AT&T and now Verizon. Vzw has been much slower in dc. The best I have seen is 12 down. I got that on att 4g not lte, but that was md. but I still plan on keeping vzw due to its coverage and the fact that AT&T has not seen the numbers on their network yet.

Right now with 3 bars in DC the best I got after 3 test is 2.49 down and .65 up.

What AT&T says and what they accomplish are actually two different things. There are plenty of AT&T markets that are still running EDGE, so I hardly think that their 3G coverage will be replaced with LTE by the end of 2013.

Some of these article you are linking to are old and were written while the industry still expected AT&T to acquire T-mobile. Now that that deal is dead, AT&T will be suffering from a spectrum crunch.

I'll just toss my 2 cents into the mix - in Chicago, VZW is definitely the way to go.

Out in the suburbs, AT&T performs pretty well - I was able to pull between 17-21 Mbps downstream when I was about 19 miles out from the city.

In the city, though - especially on the Metra trains - AT&T LTE is just not very hot. On the train, I say I would average around 6-9 Mbps down.

In the city itself - like when I'm sitting at my desk at the office, numbers are abysmal. Doing a couple of speed tests right this instant:

Test 1 (2 bars - LTE indicator on):
- 112 ms Ping
- 2.20 Mbps down
- 2.10 Mbps up

Test 2 (2 bars - LTE indicator on):
- 138 ms Ping
- 2.19 Mbps down
- 1.94 Mbps up

Definitely not pretty.

I would suggest doing some research on your specific areas of use - including places you might travel to - to see what the spectrum situation looks like.

In Chi-town, Verizon has about twice the spectrum AT&T has (from what I've read). I'm currently using AT&T for my iPhone - but come iPhone 5 - if it has LTE - I may be jumping ship...

I don't think you understand. Those plans had been in place before the announced T-Mobile merger. Even post-failed merger, the plan remains the same because the same spectrum crunch is the same.
