Until few months ago we had to my LTE with sim locked devices which is why I move wifi/mobile router to be more flexible.

Wifi for me as I have an iPhone with 10G data plan plus a mobile Wifi router with another 2GB. My navigation needs are covered; only missing "find my device"; that's the only little risk.

20GB 4G (used to have literally unlimited with a different provider until last year, but the coverage wasn't as good so it made it a bit pointless.)

So based on my use over the past several years I decided there was no point paying for more than the 20GB because I rarely go over 10GB in a normal month and that's with using it far more than I need to. I've found that just using it without thinking about if I'm connected to WiFi or not stil keeps me well within the 20GB. In the unlikely event I ever need more, I'll add on more but I don't see that day coming for years yet, there's just nothing to eat up that much data that I use.

I've got unlimited 200meg cable at home/office where most of my time is spent so when I remember I hook up to that.

What do you pay for the 20GB 4G?

My phone is with Verizon, unlimited text, data, and roaming. My company picks up the cost of the service AND the phone. One of a handful of perks :D

I'm in the UK so our prices are probably ridiculous by comparison. I pay £40 for the 20GB, unlimited everything else. The plan I was on previously was half that price for unlimited everything but they were dragging their heels with 4G rollout and I'm not known for my patience :D

My contracts up soon so I'm not sure what I'll be doing next. If nothing else the price will drop drastically when the words, cancel my contract are uttered :D

Are you effin kidding? $58 for unlimited call/text and 20 gb of 4g LTE? Screw Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, TMobile, etc. Bastards.

Would that be more costly in the USA?
I pay €43: €33 for unlimited call/text with 5Gb and €10 for a separate sim with 10Gb in my iPad
This is certainly not the cheapest provider, but it has the best 2g/3g/4g-network available and a decent customer service (which I never need, but it's there if I would ever need it).

Uhhhh, yeah.

Verizon is what I use and has the best coverage here so I'll compare them. The previously mentioned 20 gb plan with unlimited talk/text will run $140 a month on Verizon without adding in the phone cost.

In your situation Verizon has 12 and 18 gb plans costing $90 and $110 a month (includes the $20 phone and $10 iPad line fees).

What went wrong with your system? Isn't there any heavy competition? I have the choice in KPN, Vodaphone and t-Mobile and a bazillion MVNO providers. KPN is priced similar to Vodaphone and T-mobile is the cheaper option.
When I go with an MVNO I can have my iPhone contract for €20,25 per month.
My 10Gb is really cheap, got it with my fiber and it would normally cost €30 per month.
But even without the deal I got it's still way cheaper when compared to Verizon.

I've heard they have to build a lot larger infrastructure here since the country is so spread out with lots of areas with small populations. I still think they're gouging us though.

Holy hell thats expensive, I thought it would be cheaper stateside.

I should probably also say that the £40 price I mentioned also included a "free" iPhone 6, which I didn't need so I sold it and put the money aside to pay towards my contract price. So when all's said and done it effectively worked out at £18 ish a month.

Thanks guys I think I will get the LTE version just incase. Also I forgot about the find my iPhone. The only way to track a wifi iPad is when its connected to a known wifi network.

You might also want to consider getting the 200MB/month For Life data plan from T-Mobile. It doesn't cost anything and is useful for Find My Device purposes. They also have a $10/5GB bucket promo, where you get 5GB of data that you can use up over 5 months.

So I successfully signed up with ringplus on my iPad air cellular. You have to read all the caveats and I protect my exposure with a prepaid debit card etc..
But I have 3750 MB for 'free' each month (after an initial pyramid scheme style one time payment of $27+tax), just don't go over. It uses the sprint Network. Slickdeals is probably the best place to read about it if you want, they have a great wiki.

Last speed test was 23 down 7.5 up 50 ms ping. Sprint coverage is better than I thought in my area, never tried them.

Cellular model is totally worth it now :p

I'm not willing to use it as my primary phone line , but tablet data - eh what do I have to lose?

The T-Mobile 200 MB free is a no brainer too
