I have an old sawtooth and like many people find the prices of the original airport card to be a bit inflated.

I read that lucent Wavelan silver, bronze, gold cards are backwards compatible with the original Airport specs.

Does anyone know if this works for certain? If it does, I'd like to pick one up cheap from ebay and stick it in my Sawtooth.

Thank you.

Not sure about the card you're mentioning, but another option is a PCI card with a Broadcom chip, like Buffalo AirStation card (model WLI2-PCI-G54S). I put one in a MDD G4, and it worked beautifully -- OS X even recognized it as an Airport card.
