Those bags are not bad at all!

I guess people here will still complain:

-Why is this not happening in my country?
-This bags are rubbish.
-I already have a MacBook Air, iPad, etc.
-They are too expensive!

Blah, blah, blah you get the idea from all the other posts in the forum.

Congrats to whoever did actually buy their surprise bags! =)

-It is happening in my country
-The bags aren't rubbish, but some of the stuff inside the bags is rubbish.
-I already have a MacBook Air, iPad, etc.
-They are too expensive!

I stayed at home and drank amazake. I think I got the better end of the deal ;)

Why isn't this popular in other countries?

What isn't popular? The Japanese tradition or Apple selling lottery bags? While we are at it why isn't the Fourth of July popular in other countries?

Not all of the other posts.

I think this is a great idea and for the price (less than a Retina Mini), you could walk out with an 11" MBA or iPad Air. Worth the price and a fun thing to do if you can afford it.

If I were in Japan, I'd try it. I would not complain about any items because I would keep some and gift the rest if I did not obtain an MBA or iPad Air.

As others have said, it's like the lottery (which I do spend some $ on.)

Congratulations to the Lucky Bag buyers.

Why isn't this popular in other countries?

A few reasons:

1) Laws prohibiting it or making such a promotion difficult
2) Cultural customs
3) Civility levels (even if legal, Apple would need to have ambulances and police on the ready if they did it in the U.S.)
4) Cost of promotion exceeds potential positive publicity and goodwill gained by company

At a cost of 345 I fail to see how getting a bunch of junk you probably didnt need is a deal. If anyone who lives outside Japan wants to get lucky send me the 345 and I'll send you a bunch of random ebay junk!

The retail value of all the items comes out to $345 if you get the iPod nano. You could likely sell everything in there you don't want...what you're paying for is really a chance at the other three bags. I'd buy your ebay junk if there was a chance I'd get a diamond ring or a new car.

Unclear of the concept...

Oh really? An iPad mini that costs $299 isn't worth $345 including a $100 bag and a $60 battery? iPad Air at $499 plus a $50 smart cover not worth $345? $149 iPod nano with another $200 worth of stuff not worth $345? Math not your strong suit?

You don't seem to get it. These with the decent stuff like Macbook Airs, iPads etc are the EXCEPTION. Most bags have absolute crap. I don't know what the article is talking about when it says "three configurations"; that's simply not true. Perhaps three LUCKY types. Two coworkers of mine got the bags this year and both ended up with garbage. They got some bluetooth speakers, shirts, ipod shuffle, Macbook Pro battery and an iPhone 4 case and a couple other crappy items...MSRP above the price of the bag but nowhere near worth it. Most items aren't even useful to the purchaser even if they do have a value over purchase.

These bags are used by businesses to get rid of end of season crap and things that just don't sell, nothing more. A few decent items are thrown in but in the end it's like any gambling, 90% of the people get burned.

Interesting, but was it iPod shuffle or nano? And yeah most of us here know the odds of getting a true lucky bag are very few prob 1/50 or something like that.

Knowing my sorry excuse for luck, I'll pass on having any Lucky Bags over here.

I am unsure if this happens outside the US but in the US there are people who will literally harm others for shoes. Can you imagine what they would do if they knew a MacBook Air was involved? I think there's a recent beating/shooting in the news over some Jordans. I won't be so ignorant as others and lump every American in the class (or classless) of people who would do harm to another over something as stupid as shoes or a waffle iron at WalMart, but these people do exist and they do cause a stir.

I think the idea is nice and culturally speaking, it seems like a fun thing to do. If you have the money to spend then it could be a lot of fun. If all bags do not at least yield 36,000 yen worth of merchandise then it seems like quite a gamble to me. From the few posts here it sounds possible that you could find yourself holding a bag of crap.

I don't get the complaining. Sure getting an iPad is probably 1 in 50 and a macbook is 1 in 100.

But the fact is the items in the bag you get still match the value of what you pay, and if you don't want or need them you can SELL them. Usually at a slight loss but as most are customised exclusively for this promotion then that can raise demand that extra bit for the exclusivity, especially in an area where this doesn't happen. But at the end of it all this is a GAMBLE that you WILLINGLY took part in.

If this was in UK I would do it every year.
