Change the notification style to an alert with lock screen option ON and it will have the subtlety you want.
Doesn't work if your phone is screen down. Furthermore, the benefit of an LED alert in more general--although somewhat beyond what is being discussed here--is that it can repeat itself and you can notice it later on after you missed something to realize you missed it without even touching your phone or even being right next to it.

Nothing works if your phone is in your pocket... which is more likely where it will be. Conclusion: you're never going to be satisfied.

Well, in this particular case it's for times when the phone isn't in the pocket and is face down as some people keep it that way. Depending on the LED it might also be possible to see it through the pocket or elsewhere where the phone might be kept (not everyone by far keeps it in their pocket when it's not out lying somewhere). In the case of notification LED in general, it's where it can by lying anywhere where you see it, face up or down (depending on where that LED is located), when you missed a notification.

Ultimately, not all of this is for everyone of course, but plenty of people find it useful on other platforms like Android and even BB (now and when it was much more widespread). That said, it's still different from the flashlight alerts that are offered by iOS so far, which is what the original reply was about.

I was bored yesterday and came up with a backwards way of doing the same thing...

PriorityHub, LockHTML 3, and removing the extended notifications with either a pure black iWidget or probably Flex 2.

Bam. :D Just like NoLED, but better.

It's not like those of us with the iPhone 5S even seen our lock screen since we unlock with our fingerprints. :p
