M1 16" heat performance vs M1 13"

@Gonfonix What app do you use to check the temperature?
I tried iStat Menus but it works only for SSD, cannot see any other sensors.

@fa8362, exactly that's why I was asking ... because for almost everyone it seems to be cold always (M1/M1 pro/M1 max). Of course even mine its cooler than my previous mbp mid2015 with intel, but its still warm.
 
yep, definitely doesn't run cold or room temp like my 13" under same use cases. Doesn't make its a deal breaker for most, but once I go cold, don't know if I can go back.

exactly how I'm feeling. im wondering if it takes a few days maybe for background stuff to load in? but my m1 mba was quite a bit cooler under same load.

I agree with this and it makes sense that it would be the case.

16 was not on 12.01, just 12, so will continue to switch back and forth and see if there's anything noticeable;
I got 14 days!

The colder weather right now can also make our hands cold, and this can make the laptop feel warm. On tests it wasn't going above 30c on the 16" during basic tasks. I would run it and test the internal temps and measure temps through there. Sometimes random apps that may be backed up, or newly installed can become problematic. But it could also be uploading to iCloud or doing app updates in the background if you have enough.

Human body temp is 98.6, our hands get to about 88-92. It would feel warmer if our hands and arms were colder like now. Also 2 monitors is bound to draw some heat, which is why they most likely made the encasing bigger. The M1 probably didn't output to more than 1 for this reason, it would've made it run hot.
 
tg pro says 48degrees C on my 16" m1pro with just Safari (3 tabs) and mail opened.

I use TG Pro mainly. Currently, iStatistica Pro is not updated. TG Pro has support for the new Macs and allows checking the fan speed and setting fan curves and stuff. By default, TG Pro does not touch the fans as they are on "System."

Updating to 12.0.1, installed TG Pro (Trial), grabbed Cinebench from App Store.

14" M1 MAX, 64 GB, 2TB

Single core:
  • 68C (max)
  • Fans Off (never turned on, according to TG Pro, but if I put my ear up on the vents at top of keyboard I can hear a faint whir.
Multi Core:
  • Went to 100C within a few seconds
  • Fans showed 2400 RPM
  • Turned it off within 10 seconds or so
How are reviewers getting 53C on multi core Cinebench R23 test with 1400RPM?

My 16" MBP M1 Max is the most impressive Apple computer I've ever had, and I go back the the Apple II days!
I've been running for two days and haven't been able to get the fans to turn on. Under heavy load it gets a touch warmer than room temp. I'm running a 32" 4K external monitor. Zero heat issues with my external monitor.

I haven't see any warm yet on a 14 inch 16GB/1TB. Even when setting it up and copying over a bunch of stuff. That being said, the processors in the 14/16 are more powerful, so expect more heat than a 13 M1. No way you can eliminate heat completely.
 
Can you guys run TG PRO to monitor your temps and then run cinebench multi core and tell us what temps you guys are getting?
 
Keep in mind that thermal paste takes some time to break in - after several heat cycles temps should lower a bit. I have a 16GB 13" M1 MBP that usually is around 43C using TG Pro. My new 16" M1 Max 64GB as I type this (just got it 4 hours ago) is at 47C. Things are indexing though etc. I did play a quick Warcraft 3 game on it and temps only got to 60 ish C or so. Same game on the 13" temps would stay near 80C so the 16" is staying MUCH cooler under load than my 13". Now down to 46C and the fans are off.
 
After doing some research, I noticed a few things. So, for the MacBook Pro 16 inch M1 Pro/Max, it seems like the fans only come on during the following situations:

If the temp of the system reaches 95 C.
Or, the system stays at a steady temperature above 60 C for a while.

When my system hit 95 C, the fans finally sped up according to TG Pro. Furthermore, when I ran GTA V through CrossOver, my system hit 60 C then eventually 79 C. After maybe 5-10 mins, the fans finally turned on to 1500 ish RPMs and the temps dropped to 71 C.

I also was downloading a large file for 2 hours yesterday and the CPU got warm to roughly 62 C. Eventually, the fans came on at again, 1500 RPMs.

Lastly, I charged my system starting at 1 % battery. After 20 minutes went by, the system got a bit warm. Highest temp reported by TG Pro was 47 C but the system felt warm due to the charging. So again, the fans came on automatically at 1500 RPMs. Therefore, it seems as if Apple did this by design.

NOTE: Your system may very. If you are on a 14" model, then it may function differently. Or, if you do not have either the 10 Core CPU and 16/24/32 Core GPU, then your system may perform different.

Old thread I know, but the heat issues was attributed to a memory leak bug, which was subsequently fixed.

As of april 2022, how is the heat on the 16" now, @jqc and @kvlq ? Did it get as cool at the M1 13, or is it still luke warm under normal light tasks like web browsing, streaming music etc?

I just replaced my M1 13 with the M1 14 base, and I'm so surprised with the "poor" thermals and poor battery life compared to the M1 13. The palm rests are always luke warm and make my palms sweaty, compared to the ice cold M1 13. Considering getting the M1 16 if it feels as cold as the M1 13.

My M1 Air was always cool to the touch while browsing, 16" M1 Pro is mostly warm. My Air pulled 4W from the Power Socket, 16" fluctates between 7-18W just starring at a webpage.

Does it bother you, or you don't care?

I'm wondering if something is wrong with these machines, bugs in macOS or something that causes the temperatures to increase as much, or if it's simply normal. I'm hoping Apple can fix this in a software update. On the other hand, it's been 7 months since their release. Any bugs should be fixed by now. I guess this is just normal for M1 Pro, and how it is?
 
Actually it bothers me a little, the Air was much more energy efficient as far as i can tell. Just previewing a song in finder makes the laptop to pull between 10-20W. Often spikes to above 25W without doing something. However i am no expert by any means, cant tell why that is. Seems like the M1 Pro is much less power efficient than the M1 and the MiniLED Screen with calculating 2000 zones certainly needs a lot of power too (however with black screen it only uses 1-2W less compared to low brightness). Overall the 16" is great, but the Air was much cheaper and good enough for me. Would have waited 2-3 generations to get a new device, but given the situation in the world i wasnt sure it it is a good idea to wait :rolleyes:
