I sold my macbook air M1 a few days ago, before selling it I did a full reset to the system and it reinstall the OS, met the guy at a coffee shop, everything was working fine and the deal was done, 20 min later he msg me that the laptop is on but there is a black screen, i go to check, we try to do a hard reboot, nothing works, then all of a sudden after 1 hour it works again and everything is fine. Now 4 days later I get a message from the buyer, telling me that the black screen is back and he wants to return me the Mac and get his money back. do you guys have any idea what's going on here?

Possibly something with the firmware. Try either or both of these:
I do have one question though—did you use "Erase All Content and Settings" to erase the Mac? You should ALWAYS try that first, and then if THAT doesn't work, go into Recovery and erase.

Thank you very much for this, yes I used "Erase All Content and Settings"

I am sorry to hear about your troubles.

I think you have to clarify what full reset means? Did you go into recovery and wipe the ssd? Then setup APFS? Then install MacOS. Then you need to go to Apple ID and remove the Mac from your account. Once all of that is done then the Mac should work like new for the next owner.

If you didn't wipe the drive and just re-installed the MacOS it can cause problems.

Also you might want to sell your used items on something like Swappa.com. When you list your device set a no returns policy. And probably not a good idea to meet people at a coffee shop. Better just to ship instead even though it costs more there is no chance you will get scammed or they start negotiating on price.

Good luck!

I did it from the new way to do it, from "system preferences" - "erase all content and settings"

Also, what do you mean by a "black screen?" Like when the machine POSTs, or when it tries to boot? Those are two different things.

I understand but sometimes software that is supposed to save time ends up causing more problems than not. Just to be safe and eliminate any hardware issues it is just a suggestion that you do it the old way and see if that resolves your problem.

Good luck either way.
