Does the M1 have only 1 controller and does the M2 have 2 separate controllers?

Lastly, Apple is still limiting the new Air to a single external display, so if you want to plug your laptop into more than one monitor at a time, you’ll need to step up to a 14-inch MacBook Pro (which supports up to four external displays) or figure out some other workaround.
To break that down its this for M1/M2 MBA's
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at 1 billion colors and:
One external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz
vs
Up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors (M1 Pro) or
Up to three external displays with up to 6K resolution and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors (M1 Max)

I think on my 2019 16", they have only 2 controllers, one on each side. That's awesome that they did that for the Mx Airs.

So, the new M1 MBPs have a dedicated controller for each port?
The m2 MBA actually has 3 ports compared to the M1 MBA. That MagSafe port is actually a USB-C charging port. It's a bit similar to what implemented in the 24" iMac even with it 4 ports (two thunderbolt/USB4 ports, 2 usb-c ports) which suggests two controllers. That also is limited to a single external 6K display.
