M1 Macbook Air base model:

Sound through HDMI drops intermittently. It could be 20min, it could be 5min before it goes dead for a split second. Could happen once, could happen a few times with varying intervals. But never goes dead for longer than a second.

I have tried different cables, and no changes.

The video doesn't change whatsoever with the audio drops. This is also only with an external connected. It doesn't happen with the M1 Air on its own.

I have only managed to find one other user where this happens, but theirs is over Bluetooth.

I have quite an odd (and very minor admittedly) issue with my M1 MBA. On one of my blogs (which are Blogspot ones) the navigation has a slight glitch on my MBA in Safari, though Safari on my mini doesn't have the glitch - they both run the same version of Big Sur though the mini runs it in X86.

Not that bothered about it but i just find it a bit weird the M1 version of Safari should have it.

Then maybe you can help me, cuz all I could find for help was from YouTube and it has just cost me money, convincing me to buy stuff that doesn’t work. . I have my GRaid 12tb 0raid hooked up, but I’m only getting 240mbs read and write. I bought owc thunderbolt 4 hub, No help, same speeds. Using all thunderbolt 4 cables. G-Raid firmware is not updated for Big Sur yet, so.... Anything you think I’m missing. I should be able to get full speed with the M1 processor. 440mbs. Thanks. I owe you one. I have big 6k raw feature film project on 12tb that is stuttering.

Guessing it's either coming from trackpad due to suction when opening lid. Or, from keyboard key switch retraction. You can try ruling out the first by putting down some sticky notes on palmrest next to trackpad to create an air gap.

The noise seems to be louder after the MPB has been "closed" for some hours...
It's driving me crazy... 🙂

Have you tried Zoom extension in Chrome? Or, try direct download from Zoom.

2) My photo stream does not work. I tried many things, rebooting... It's enabled but no photos. Works in all other devices, Macs and iPhone/iPad. Go figure. WORKAROUND: I found none. Waiting for a fix (I'm on 11.2.1).

MBA M1, 7-core GPU, 16 GB memory

Overall experience is very good, everything is functioning as supposed. There are some issues, but i think these are more related toBug Sur such as:
- Beach-baling randomly (and very rarely) for simplest tasks, for example when closing rosetta applications, or just while annotating pdf in preview
- Changing volume with feedback sound turned on is a nightmare, its laggy and completely horrible experience
- No longer able to drag and scroll at the same time, i don't even know why, is it my touchpad or just big sur "improvement"?

But my biggest concern, is pop which occurs when i press the metal bar above keyboard in the middle (near MBA logo, above keys F4-F8). I own my MBA for a month now, and i have discovered it very recently. This pop is pretty loud and i can feel it when it happens, it's as if under thermal expansion, some parts just pop into place. It happens only when device is warm enough, and i replicate it every single time. When it's cold or only slightly warm, it just doesn't happen, but when it heats up, i know that i can pop it ONCE, then it just doesn't happen until it cools down again. Anyone else experienced it?

I'm really worried to call Apple support, i own 2017 MBP and i never had / wanted to have my device opened, it's still "intact", and i don't want to have my new machine opened and repaired already (also, i don't really know how repair program in my country works, we don't have any apple stores, only resellers). I'm no longer under the 2-week trial period, and i don't even know if it happened before, i think i haven't used my device extensively enough, but i have discovered this pop when doing Cinebench 10 minute run recently, when device was warm enough to throttle (at this point, i can always replicate the pop), i grabbed it to check how hot the bottom part was, thats when i heard and felt it for the first time.

Apart from that, nothing is concerning, performance is on point (however it does get really warm, even hot when under heavy load - games for example). Compared to my MBP 2017 i love the new keyboard and lack of fan noise, but the temperature under load is pretty much the same, or even lower for Intel, but it's just 2-core i5.

Which browser? I don't have any lag at all with Firefox or Edge. Weird that they are less smooth than on an ipad. I find my M1 Air is far faster than my iPad...

Safari. Tried the wife’s iPad side by side as she still has it and the same sites did not have the same problem over there.

There is a problem with the Thunderbolt ports which was not fixed (at least for me) in the latest update. Every time the Mac mini is rebooting, I have to reconnect every device connected to the thunderbolt ports. But when reconnected everything works till the next reboot. Maybe this is the same problem?

Have an update. It seems like my issues stemmed from using the Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard. This thread outlines the exact same issue I'm facing – https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252138598. Unbelievable.

Still not a big fan of the M1 Pro's magnetic latch. It's almost TOO strong. Trying to open it on many surfaces causes it to just slide away across the surface. Would help a lot if Apple made the rubber feet a bit grippier instead of hard rubber that doesn't do much at all.

Occasionally Firefox will be unresponsive after sleep. Not locked up as it will quit with a click, just won't respond to mouse in the body. FF updates didn't fix. Quit FF and restart FF and works fine.
Very seldom (maybe 6 times since delivery in Dec) my old TB monitor will show a few vertical purple lines that blink on and off with the mouse movement. Reboot will fix.
Pretty machine solid so far.

SMB network discovery stopped working and overall SMB behavior is different after 11.2.2 update. Prior to 11.2.2 I could launch Finder, go to network and it would discover SMB devices but now it doesn't. Also, could browse to smb://hostname.local or smb://username@hostname.local and it would prompt for username and/or password but now it doesn't.

Hi all, I purchased an M1 Macbook Air in November 2020, and was using it as my main computer along side an ZMUIPNG USB C hub, this was all working perfectly well and I had no issues. At Christmas, I got another ZMUIPNG USB C hub, but this one had power delivery.
I then plugged in my keyboard, mouse, Ethernet and monitor into this USB C hub, along with the Macbook charger (so that I had a free USB C port on my Macbook), all was working perfectly fine until 21st January.
I had been downstairs using my Macbook as a normal laptop, and when I was done, I closed the lid, carried it up to my desk, placed it down and then plugged in USB C hub with everything connected.
The screen flashed for a brief second and then went black. Everything died, the Macbook refused to turn back on, I tried all the reset commands and got into contact with Apple first thing the next morning.
They advised me that I needed to ship it back to them for return (Apple stores closed bc of lock down) I was then sent a box to ship it back to them, last week (27/1/21) and I sent it off to them the same day. Today (2/2/21) I received an email saying that they have received my Macbook with the message "We’re looking at your product."
I just wanted to use this thread to share my experiences with you and document my repair process. After reading through this thread, I am not the only one with this issue and from reading others, I should receive an replacement unit within the next couple of weeks.
I will keep everyone updated as and when I find out and might I suggest avoiding USB C hubs with Power Delivery!

This afternoon, I received an email from Apple saying that 'Your repair request is complete'
I logged onto the apple support website, and I have been informed that my product has been shipped and is on its way back to me with UPS, this should take 2 working days to get to me.
Whether or not my MacBook has been replaced or repaired is yet unknown, I'll be able to tell as there was a small scratch on the wrist rest, but I'm hoping that is it done now and I wont have this issue again. When I received my MacBook, I am going to use it with my original USB C hub (the one without Power Delivery) and hopefully that will be it.
My advice to anyone reading, is not to use an USB C hub with Power Delivery, regardless of brand - even ones from apple. As its the first generation of M1 chips, there are going to be loads of issues like these which will become apparent over the course of the next few months and I wish everyone best of luck with their M1 devices - they're the future!

Sorry for only just updating this thread, I have been buried in college work for the past week and a half!
Anyway, I received my MacBook on the 5th, so it came within the 2 working day time scale specified.
The MacBook was returned to me in the original shipping box and I can confirm that it is my original MacBook Air, as the scratch is still there. Upon lifting the lid, the MacBook booted back up as if it was a brand new one, confirming that all my data which wasn't on iCloud is lost (my fault!)
After inspecting the paperwork contained within, I saw that the Touch ID, Logic Board and I/O board have been replaced, confirming my theory that the mother board was fried by the USB C hub.
I will attach a copy of the invoice I received, which details what has been replaced and the additional information regarding the repair.
I hope no one else has the unfortunate experience of their M1 MacBook breaking and I really do hope that Apple fix this in the 'M2' or second generation of the Apple Silicon chipset.

Apparently, the above error happens if you have an external drive connected. Priceless. The question I now have is this, if one has said drive connected for Time Machine backups, how is one to backup or even restore their M1 Mac?

Hmm...

I use an old USB HDD for TM backups and I've had no problems at all.
