I have an M1 MBA but thinking of upgrading to an MBP.

As most know, the M-chip MBAs are fanless and are completely silent regardless of how little ventilation they have or how hard they are pushed.

How quiet are the M-chip MBPs in comparison? I've had old MacBooks that sound like a jet engine when getting hot, even when positioned on my lap and I really want to avoid that.

Very quiet but depends on your workload obviously. Assuming you’ll be doing similar stuff that you were on the MBA then you’ll most likely never hear the fan on a current gen MBP.

The loudest my 14" MBP has ever been was when testing Cyberpunk 2077 and the game toolkit Apple dropped during WWDC. Even then, the "noise" was just air being exhausted from the machine rather than any mechanical noise from the fans themselves. Because Apple Silicon runs cooler overall, the fans have to work significantly less to maintain decent operating temperature.

Neve saw a fan noise under my similar use between air and 14 pro.

I do graphic artwork with mine, Photoshop and Affinity Designer. Occasionally, I am editing some pictures in Capture One. I never heard my 14 M2Pro MBP spinning the fans. I know they are running because iStats shows it running, otherwise I would say it never kicked in.
