WOW that sucks. But geek bench shows m2 as much faster.
The processor, yes, but Apple cut corners on the 256GB SSD. Upgrade to the 512, and you'll be fine, i.e., the 256GB is the slow SSD, not the 512

While I'm sure you're probably correct, we don't actually know yet whether the 256GB SSD in the new base M2 Mini is the same slower speed as in the air. I imagine we'll get confirmation this week when testers get their hands on them...
Right. TBD.

So how many watts does the new M2 use. M1 Mini was 39W max.

Well, it's confirmed now. The 256GB M2 Mini has a substantially slower SSD Read/Write speed than the 512GB models. And likewise the 512GB models are around 1/2 the speed of the 1TB models. So in general: 256GB=1500MB/s, 512GB=3000MB/s, and 1T=6000MB/s

Hats off to you for calling this so quickly!

And if I've understood everything I've read on this correctly the faster 6000mbs speed also only applies to the 1TB SSds in the Mini M2 Pro version (and not, for instance, in an upgraded 1TB drive added to an M2 Mini order).

I don't know about that one. I suppose it all depends on how many SSD chips are present on the Motherboard. I saw a teardown of the M2 Pro Mini and it has 8 pads for SSD chips so it's possible that SSD drives with more than 1TB will be even faster since the 1TB version only populates 4 of the 8 chip pads. It will also depend on the density of the chips used since a 2TB model may still use only 4 pads with 512MB chips instead of 8 pads with 256MB chips.

Lets just be glad that Apple isn't just using a single pad for 512MB and 1TB models (which they could).

Since the base M2 Mini tops out at 2TB (instead of 8TB like the Pro versions) it is a fairly safe bet to assume that the base M2 Mini only has 2 pads for SSD chips. (i.e. 3000MB/s speed cap on the SSD)

In that case I winder if you can just order a base mode and just upgrade the ssd to 1tb without getting a pro model. Or they only come in certain configurations. And what is the speed of the 256ssd in the M1 mini. Is it slower than 1500MB/s. Also the M1 is 39W max. How much power does the M2 use.

hi everyone. First time posting in a long long time...I need an editing machine and my budget is limited. I could get a Mac Mini M1 with 16GB ram and 521SSD for a good price, but I wish I could afford a M2pro or a studio! for a lot more...
I use Premiere pro. I intend to edit 4k30 and sometimes 4k60-one or two layers coming from a Sony FX30 in XAVC S at 200Mbps max or less...1080p 30/60 too. My projects range from 5min to 90 min max. No heavy grading at all..some lumetri colour. Am I delusional thinking that this Mac Mini M1 can edit this and export it in a reasonable time? I don't need it to be superfast for export but I care more about the editing experience. Has Premiere finally been optimized for the M1 chips? I just can't edit with FCPX...too old to re-learn! If someone could give me an honest and brutal opinion based on first hand experience I would appreciate it very much. Thanks-I didn't want to make a new thread but I may have to...

Here is another good article comparing speed.

I tried to make a graph like this with those scores, but I had to give up because some data is missing.
