Just recently got a 13" M1 MacBook Pro. I already had a PC with dedicated Radeon RX570 GPU to my Sony TV via HDMI.
No issues with the PC to TV which I have retested since the M1 issue and all plugs are staying cool. It is HDMI to HDMI connection.

I decided to use a dongle with HDMI from the MacBook to the TV and noticed a bit of heat that I didn't like at the dongle (although it seemed to work great), so tried a dedicated USB C to HDMI cable direct (which also worked great and gave me some more options in MAC OS). The plug at the monitor was once again creating a large amount heat - almost too hot to touch. The TV was also resyncing? or just losing connection with the M1 every few minutes as well. Before it caused any damage, I disconnected it.

What is it that is causing the USB C to HDMI heat issue?

Thanks for any input.

The adapter uses a chip to convert DisplayPort to HDMI. These signals are at least 5.4 Gbps up to 8.1 Gbps (four inputs). An HDMI 2.0 adapter outputs at 6 Gbps (three outputs). An HDMI 2.1 adapter outputs at 12 Gbps (4 outputs).

Chips create heat especially when they have to do processing in the Gbps range. Also, they may have to convert voltages which also creates heat. I would ignore the heat issue if the adapter is working.

If an adapter is having loss of connection issues, then it should be replaced.

Thanks very much joevt, that it explains it perfectly! I have plans to replace this TV with a nice 4K monitor in the future so that should help my situation. This Sony is a great TV that can easily be put in a bedroom when I do so.
