Not to derail your thread and provide some useful info. If your office noise 25-30dB - you will hear it clearly. 30-35 you may hear it a little. Somewhere between 35-45 it becomes “silent”.

Ah yes, this ”reviewer“. She came into the “max studio is Loudest mac at idle” thread to promote her video, ignored all the information and replied to me:

“Sorry, I have no idea from where you get your info, but I own Mac Studio M1 Max and M1 Ultra and both under even super crazy heaviest load I ever tested it never spin fans more than idle which is 1340 rpm = also idle noise which is ABSOLUTELY NOT POSSIBLE TO NOTICE IN SILENT OFFICE”

Not understanding that the information was directly from Apple or understanding that room ambient noise is the largest factor determining whether you will hear it or not.

Basically, she’s the perfect YouTuber!
I checked my office and at night it is at 17 DB noise level unless my neighbors dog is barking and I don't hear my Studio Ultra even putting my ear within one inch of the vents running my standard suite of modules in RX 9 which on my MacBook Pro Mi Max gets the fans going. I got to believe your Studio has a defect, I received my 3/18 so it was one of the first ones.

I take it not many folk here have experience with a mirror-door Powermac G4 or the G4 Xserve. THOSE were loud.
I had and loved a 2003 dual G5 that made some noise. I remember that died and getting an intel 2009 mini. I was blown away by how fast and quiet it was in comparison- and probably a quarter of the cost…

The last G4s were loud because of a defective power supply. Apple recalled them to install a new one, but I was out of the country for a few years and missed out.

Yes agree - the Mac Studio is ever so quiet - just like the M1 Mini I traded in.

Compared to my 2019 16" MBP which sounds like white noise generator constantly hearing the fans spin up is annoying when you compare it to the Mac Studio's ultra quietness on the same desk...
I have a Studio (base + 1TB) on the way, and can't wait. My 2018 15" MBP hasn't stopped screaming for years. Open up chrome? Full-bore fans. Open photoshop? Full-bore fans.

I can't possibly imagine any computer being louder than this terrible laptop. It handily drowns out my 4 bay raid inclosure spinning at 7200rpms.

Oooh.... yes. I was able to get an Xserve Dual G4 a few years ago for fun.. and OMG... even running idle, that was similar to the noise of a vacuum-cleaner.
And I also have a MDD Power Mac G4 Dual 1.25 GHz FW 800 (the non-Mac OS 9 bootable model) and, yep... not as bad as the Xserve, but definitely the loudest "normal desktop" I ever had.

I hope to be getting the Mac Studio M1 Max (10/32) in June. Sincerely hoping that I will not get reminded of the Dual G4 days... 😳

I can just barely hear both of my Ultras IF the office is really quiet. The normal office noise with the heat or A/C going and people working is about 39dB. That totally drowns out any noise from my Studio. If I'm here in the early am with the climate control turned off and no one else here, it's closer to 30dB and then I just barely hear the Studio if I strain to hear it--and it's sitting about 2 feet away from my head on my desktop. That matches up with the dB ratings Apple provides.

I suspect that there are some faulty units out there that are making more noise, and those who have them are doing the same.

Max.

I don't think PC is the way to go. Windows just sucks big time.
It does, but try running any of the latest 3 Mac OS on a Mac mini and you will want to jump out the window. Bluetooth issues, HDMI port completely broken, cracking headphones/speakers when plugged into the 3.5mm port (USB-C to 3.5mm adapter is fine), monitor detection issues, etc. The list is endless. My windows pc by comparison is rock solid. Never had a single issue. I really really loved using Macs, but the past 3 years have been incredibly painful.

I am tempted by the Mac Studio, but the fan noise is a dealbreaker for me. I can't believe Apple run the fan at near-full speed at idle. Apple and fans/thermals are a laugh.

Apple does not run the fans at near full speed at idle. The approximate minimum rpm for the fan is 1100 and Apple runs them at about 1350. Even with all cores maxed out for over an hour, the fans stay at 1350 rpm. You have to really crank the fans up to begin hearing them, so don’t be freaked out over fan noise. I am sure there are a few cases where there is a fan defect causing extra noise, but the majority of folks report that the Mac Studio is inaudible under normal usage.

Can’t believe you’re being melodramatic about this and didn’t do a little simple research and realize that the vast majority do not hear or hear very little fan noise. Apple does not run the fan at near full speed at idle either by default. Maybe it’s just for some an oversight or a misstep but not Apple‘s normal behavior. As the poster above said, you’re freaking out over the none issue for most of us.

I worked for an Apple reseller back in the early 2000s. For some stupid reason, we had an Xserve on the floor as a display, plugged in but a big “do not touch” sign. the sign did nothing and we were treated to a jet engine taking off daily, till the service techs had enough and took it away.

It seems there are a lot of people who notice it at idle. I certainly do from listening to my friends Mac Studio (Max). I don't see why the fan can't ramp down at idle or under light usage. Seems like a very poor thermal design choice.

Say what? My 2018 Mac Mini has none of those issues. Zero. I only replaced it with a Studio Max because I felt it was time to ditch Intel and future-proof my desktop with Apple silicon. It kind of pissed me off that I got only 3.5 years out of the Mini, but they were 3.5 good years, I still have it, and it's still worth over $500. Apple doesn't make big chip transitions very often. I had no clue in 2018 that M1 was just over the horizon.

I also have a 2018 model Mac Mini and it doesn't have any of those problems either.

The HDMI/display issues are the most common (a google search will bring up every forum with several posts) and have plagued the 2018 mini since launch, and every subsequent Mac OS release. The crackling is less widespread from what I have seen. Either way, I am looking forward to upgrading to an Apple Silicon Mac for not only the speed, but with the hope these niggles are sorted.

The last iMac I used was the Bondi Blue iMac. As well as many other Macs incl. 68k before and Intel after. The Mac Studio is the worst of all. The annoying noise is unbearable.
And that I should use Mac Fans Control is a bad joke, for a 2k to 8k machine.
As someone that is a newbie here with the username "Fan Gate" and their first post said this:

"I cannot decide if I am more exited while waiting for the Mac Studio to arrive or if I am more afraid of the fan noise. Somehow I already regret that I ordered one, just because of the cheap fan noise. Ordered on March 8th. Still waiting."

I don't believe a word you say.

My Studio Max is noisy but I need it ! I will sell it after my work period, in September …
