My screen wont shut off / or turn back on when opening / closing M1 Macbook Pro 14 inch...

I've already tried the following:
  • Update OS (running ventura 13.0.1)
  • Restart
  • Check battery settiings
  • Check & empty printing queues
  • Disable network / printer sharing
  • Disconnect all accessories
  • Check activity monitor for sleep preventing apps
  • i don't have any apps like amphetamine etc
  • Apple () menu > Sleep works
  • New / different user dosent change behaviour
  • Problem persists after booting into safe mode
  • Run & Check pmset -g assertions

there's one process in there which i don't 100% understand.
"
pid 324(powerd): [0x00000260000185a2] 00:14:42 PreventUserIdleSystemSleep named: "Powerd - Prevent sleep while display is on"
"

Anyone have any more ideas? could the sensor itself be the problem?

Thanks for the help!

  1. Verify Apple () menu > Sleep works. If not, that's the problem you should be troubleshooting.
  2. Test with a New User. If that works, it's user-specific, dig into what's running in your primary user.
  3. Test with Safe Mode. If that works, it's something loading on boot.
  4. If none of those solve it, have it checked by Apple - could be the lid sensor. Unlikely, but possible.

Thanks for your reply! Tried all the options above, still no luck.

Will have to see if the apple store has any ideas..
