IIRC idTech engines use Vulkan on every platform it runs on (to be fair I am not 100% sure Xbox version does). Apple doesn't support Vulkan and id seems to have no plans on supporting Metal. I don't think Bethesda cares as much. There is a version of the Elder Scrolls (Blades) that runs on iOS but I don't think it is the same engine the main series uses.

The newest idTech engine certainly does, starting with Doom 2016, I think. Before that, it would have been whatever versions of OpenGL were applicable.

And, don’t forget that Bethesda sold id SW to Microsoft this past year, so they’re not in the picture anymore

id have always been really great for Mac gaming.

Fun fact, John Carmack also ported Doom to the iPhone and then open sourced it which helped a ton of iOS game developers (including myself at the time) find the best ways to do things on the iPhone.

Setting graphics to 4 and it's locked at 60 fps (at least in the starting area). At full 10/10 graphics it drops down to about 30 fps.

If that's not impressive then I don't know what is.

I installed EvE and docked in JITA (for those who know) I'm in the 40fps area on a scaled (max space) 14" screen.
I'll test it with the 38" and a lot more activities today.

That is actually NOT that bad.
I'm waiting for iStat to update the app to read all the sensors cause I'm also curious about the temps.

Thanks for your response I appreciate it! On some level I still disagree though. This is the chart that Apple used in their presentation that jump started this entire discussion. And Apple never once mentions gaming or RTX 3080 (in fact the computer they are comparing to doesn’t even use a mobile 3080) in their presentation. All they are comparing is “relative performance” to power consumption. That’s the whole point of this graph. Now what has happened is people looked at the footnote at the bottom and started to infer a bunch of additional meaning behind this graphic that Apple never intended.

Wrong chart. This is the one where Apple compared to two 3080 laptops (155W 3080 MSI GE76 Raider 11UH-053 and 105W 3080 Razer Blade 15 Advanced RZ09-0409CE53). Those are max TGP but it's usually configurable lower depending on workload requirement.

Alright then guys, if this is about performance in Mac games and not compatibility, enjoy your very real performance in your very pretend native Mac games. I figured you'd want both.

Jimmy, I discussed being able to switch to PC and not lose macOS at the native hardware level, while still being able to use Windows natively as well to open any game dating all the way back from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, up to today.

I’m really hoping that we get both Bootcamp-like native performance in Windows, and continued improvement in MacOS performance and growing a base of AAA games for it!

I’m optimistic that Microsoft could be willing to license Windows 11 on ARM, as it seems like a matter of negotiating fees.

I hope something a bit more modern shows up as a full, 100% native M1 title soon (BG3 is still technically Rosetta, I'm led to believe).

The Windows version has raytracing and with everything maxed out on the PC my 2080 Ti can't even run the game at 4k 60 fps.

WoW's graphics engine has been completely overhauled multiple times during those 17 years and it's silly to pretend it's still the same as it was in 2004.

Doom Eternal would be a prime showcase since it's a recent 2020 release, very well Vulkan optimized for minimal hardware and MacOS supports MoltenVK Vulkan to Metal translation. However, it's listed as unplayable for some reason. Wonder if it's because DirectX to Metal translation is more mature or due to DRM but a DRM-less version exists.

Please explain in detail and with sources how double the GPU RAM makes for faster completion of ML tasks?
