OK, so the new M1 Ultra in the Studio is impressive, and at the end they said "One more to go, but Mac Pro is for another day".

Wow, that's going to be insane. The Ultra is already faster vs a single W6900x or the 28 Core in the 7.1 Mac Pro.

It can't match the cool big tower in looks, though. Let me hold on to that one at least. lol!

I love how the guy introducing the M1 ultra was standing in a studio surrounded by the Mac Pros thereby hinting at a new Mac Pro but they didn't introduce it lol...

The guy at the end did say the Mac Pro was for another day so..

Also one thing I noticed is that m1 ultra only supports up to 128gb whereas the current Mac Pro supports up to 1tb? Correct me if i'm wrong on the 1tb.

I literally don't know what to do. I was convinced this was what I was buying because my 2013 trash can is ready to be recycled.. then they ****ing blue ball us?? Now I don't know what to do. I was hoping for a Mac Pro to be announced

No slots, apple only raid 0 storage, apple only ram, and maybe SFP+ with apple only plug ins.
Definitely leaves some space for the modularity of the Mac Pro, but the performance itself is very impressive. I wonder what they'll do with the Mac Pro, if they'll leave some PCIE capabilities or things like that.

The Studio seems to be very high performing, and very small - if you don't need internal expandability of the current Mac Pro, it's pretty slick.

The Mac Studio configuration I like costs $6,199 (M1 Ultra with 64-core GPU, 128GB unified memory, and 2TB SSD) so I'd rather just buy a 7,1 since it's upgradeable. I'll wait to see what the 8,1 is like. I bet there will be some good deals on 7,1s after that comes out.

I have to agree, especially if the rumours of the top M1 chip being four M1 max (or two ultra) joined together.
i think the mac studio fits really well for what i need, so I'm going to get this with two of the new displays then when the new Mac Pro drops re-evaluate my setup.

They acted a bit like Ultra is the top end, and that might make sense. A Mac Pro design might need to move beyond SoC and into something more discrete. So it will be interesting to see where they go.

Good to see the avoided the panic and anxiety of "does this replace the Mac Pro or not." That was a good thing to do.

I have to give it to Apple, this pricing is not so bad comparing to 2019 Mac Pro pricing per performance. Well, if you count out the "non-expandability at all" for this thing that is.

Yep, I just configured an M1 Max with 64gb and 1tb SSD, comes out to £2500, which is very similar price to an i7 mini with same ram/ssd. So I think pricing is not bad.
That’s surprisingly reasonable. I expected to **** over pricing.

The Studio configs really seems targeted to those who would flock to iMac 27" with i9 + GPU + RAM upgrades in the past. I'll hold onto iMac19,1 with VEGA for awhile. Augmenting or beginning the transition to M1x can wait until the roadmap is clearer.

There probably should be a future where the screens/displays of the lower end iMacs are salvageable with an upgrade if Apple wants to continue to push sustainability. Maybe the 27" starts that trend.

Yeah but the M1 ultra smashes the 28 core xeon. The 7,1 is such bad value if you are looking for pure performance. The Mac Pro starts at $6000 for a weak 8 core, 32 RAM and amd 580 gpu.

The Mac Studio is $5,799 with 1TB and M1 Ultra and 128GB RAM.
Instead of selecting 2TB select 1TB and its much better value.

I'll hold onto 6,1 with 5K external displays for now. I'll have to wait for a various reasons to transition, like software support.

Using a PC for hard crunch now, but so much used to Mac/OS/Apple that it hurts to transition to dark side.

this is the way i was looking at it too. I very likely don't need more performance than this, and I needed a new computer a year ago (still on a 8 core trash can) but couldn't justify picking up a Mac Pro with the current specs and price point. I almost ordered a config ~$16,000 last year. This is a win in my books. If I find I need more power (probably not) I'll look into a Mac Pro when they announce it.

I believe Mac Studio is not "the half-size Mac Pro" that the BBG journalist was talked over by Apple PRs.

It's likely "the half-size Mac Pro" will be the ultimate replacement for Intel Mac Pro. It might come with some internal expansion slots.

I think there is no chance Apple silicon Mac Pro will need to keep the existing size.
