That's great news. I've only read good things so far.
I am not in the market but I like it when new tech works.

The M1 and the Mini certainly have their place. I use it as my main device for working but also have my PC alongside.

Definitely a big leap forward vs the previous intel based Mac Minis, for me at least.

You are not alone...
I have M1 mini and 2018 i5 Mini, bought within weeks of each other. That M1 (8GB RAM) is much better than my i5 (20GB RAM) for what I routinely do. I need to run virtual Windows 10, so I need that i5, else I would prefer to replace it with another M1.
I am really looking for next generation M* macs, I hope that it will replace my main 15' MBP.

I received my Mac Mini M1 today and it is fastee than my 3.1 GHz i5 iMac from 2019. I bought myself a nice display and now it all feels like a huge upgrade.
Mine replaced a 2012 iMac i7 3.4 GHz with 32 GB of RAM. Geekbench says it's half as slow but I swear it seems twice as fast. My Mac mini results were 1751/7681 and my iMac results were 3884/11399.

According to the Geekbench browser, you should only be seeing around 818/3000 with that old iMac model. The numbers only mean anything if you are testing the machines with the same version and build number of the program.

Why, when I have 20 years of experience and find the M1 Mini to be the best/in real world usage computer I have ever used!!!

Am I alone? Where are the others who recognise the M1's worth??
I agree.

I bring this up in a lot of threads all the time. But in normal day to day usage I've never in my life used a computer that feels as responsive as my M1 Mini.

I'm not talking about opening apps, I'm talking about everything when using the computer, switching between apps, zooming in pictures, documents etc, switching between virtual desktops and just general usage. Of course it is also fast when needed.

I haven't tested it in a long time. Did they change the scoring system? The iMac is still in my office. Was going to sell it, but maybe I'll download the latest Geekbench and see what it gets.

@Nihilvor You're right. I downloaded the latest Geekbench on my old iMac and got 751/2952. Guess my impression was correct. The Mac mini M1 seems twice as fast. 2.33 times as fast to be exact. I haven't tested the iMac in a few years. Did they change the scoring system from v4 to v5?

EDIT: Just checked and it was Geekbench 3 that I ran to get those numbers.

I love my M1 mini (base model). Does it have warts? Yes. Wish the usb speed issues could be resolved or at least admitted by Apple. Wish it had more ports. Still, I haven't had any bluetooth issues like others, thankfully. And coming from a 2009 iMac at home (which I tore apart and installed a SSD - thanks OWC for the video guide) and a 2015 27" iMac at work, it feels like warp speed.

Hooked up a crappy Acer 24" monitor via hdmi and it looks great.

Granted, I'm not editing 4K video or using Cinema 4D, but I use Adobe stuff all day at work - at home I'm now using the Affinity suite on the mini. Feels like a different world! So responsive and silent, yet powerful in a subdued way.

Should I have waited for a M2 version? Maybe. Do I regret buying it? Nope.

The last new Mac I bought was a G4 Windtunnel - that I regret. This little machine, I love.

Same here, use the M1 for communications and Pages, Numbers work. I have a PC the Mini sits on that is used for CAD. It's a great combination.

6 month real world testing of the M1 Mini (base 8GB/256GB) and countless numbers of Mac computers from the 1980's has led me to believe that Apple made a gross mistake when they switched from PPC to Intel back in 2006.

15 years with Intel and we suffered thru:
  • Intel RAM hungry design,
  • Intel thermal throttling,
  • Intel battery hunger,
  • Intel laziness (wasted clock and processing cycles).
Now, with M1, Apple has realized their error and have corrected their ways.

I say FINALLY!

The switch to intel actually brought me to Macs. I was always curious about OS X/macOS, but knowing that I could also run Windows natively made the choice a whole lot easier. That said, my two Macs are both M1 powered. For my non-pro usage, they are awesome.

They really didn't. PPC had to go and it was the right thing to do at that time.
I agree on this. PPC was a dead end and falling way behind. Intel actually helped revive/keep the Mac relevant and in business. Felt like using Word/Excel on the Mac at the time (evil empire), but it was the right choice.

Now it's time to move on. The world turns

Just my two cents/opinion... no offense meant to anyone

Loving my Mac Mini M1, nice to return to a Mac after several years of W10 use after my 2009 MacBook Pro became unusable. It's a very fast and smooth computer to use and both Lightroom and Photoshop work great.

Indeed, it was right at that time to move to intel, it is now the right time to move to ARM. Who knows, there may come another time when they move back to intel. Unlikely but the future is still to be written and all that.

The M1 MacMini is a perfect Grandma Computer. It can’t even run Starcraft 2 at High settings. It’s gotta long way to go. Apple needs to or could make it Half the size. Even with a fan the Chasis is all just wasted space.
Are we ceelebrating the M1 yes I will with my XDR iPad Pro M1.

The M1 is just a rebranded A14X the A12Z was already MacOS internally at Apple. The geniuses at Apple decided to take a beefed up A14X rebrand it the M1. And put it in Macs, and MacBook Pros. So people wouldn’t complain about a cellphone CPU running their Desktop MacOS.

I look forward to an M3X with A GPU that can run Starcraft 2 at Ultra settings at 1440p resolutions.

I do not qualify by offspring but by age am of the age you call”grandma”. What is Starcraft? Why is it sooo important in computer performance rhetoric? Finally. Why is your opinion on this subject seemingly based on the total dismissal of all the other users experience of the digital world?
Oh, sorry for being too personal, just a bit narked at being dismissed intellectually because of my age.

Geez, I got my first Apple Computer 43 years ago (16kb Apple ][ in 1978), learned ALGOL in 1967... either I'm a lot older, or you got a late start! :)

Sorry, don't have an M1, I need Windows and MacOS VM's. Glad you are happy with yours though!

I wouldn’t dismiss anyone, maybe the opposite celebrate that an M1 is available for everyone. It’s not robust enough for me but it will be plenty for “grandmas” and “grandpas” everywhere.

Not everyone needs a Corvette, a good Ford Explorer suffices for most people.
