M2 16gb or 32gb

I know this has been asked in the past but now we’re at the next generation!

I am a front end react web developer, who occasionally might be on a project that requires docker.

I use node js and typescript and webstorm IDE and have 15 tabs open in chrome…

How much ram should I get if I want to get a new MacBook Pro. I’m currently on a 2019 Intel with 16 GB of RAM and it struggled when I was on the project with docker quite a bit.

Same (currently). I got the 24 GB M2 MacBook Air specifically for Docker. 16 GB on my M1 MBA was working well enough but if I needed a more complicated Docker config it might have gotten tight.

For everything else, 16 GB seemed fine.

If you use Docker and had issues with 16GB in the past I'd definitely get the 32GB.

I agree with the others, I've got a 16GB 14" M1 Pro and it starts to max out whenever I'm running Docker containers so I'd go for the 32GB option if you can

If it were me, I'd opt for 32GB. I find even 16GB to be a bit constraining but YMMV

The docker project that made things go really slow was a terrible nightmare project.

Thankfully I’m not on that anymore.
But if you think 32 GB is necessary I guess I’ll go with that…

Also the idea of getting a MacBook other than a MacBook Pro is foreign to me. I’ve only ever gotten pros because the others weren’t powerful enough. But now I’m seeing that even the air can do up to 24 GB. But the screen is small. I like the large screen.

32GB to future proof it. At the moment I have 8 taps open in safari and its using 14.8GB.

Over time using just safari and 12-15 taps ive seen it over 25GB used.

Ok. So I'm looking at either a macbook air maxed out to 24GB RAM. Or a Macbook Pro with 32GB. its $1k more.
Iv'e always gone with pro before because air couldn't handle all the stuff, but now I'm wondering if it could...

The things I do mostly:

web development with webStorm IDE (ram hogger!). React developer.
Docker once in a while. Currently no docker projects
Chrome
Indesign - (writing a novel)
figma
Photoshop - rarely
Screenflow

And I connect to a 4k monitor for working most of the time. Monitor charges macbook at same time as using it thru usb-c.
