My M2 Air (8/256) display suddenly went black. The keyboard, touchpad, and even the music I was hearing were playing without any interruption. There is no backlight or pink area in the display. Just pitch black!

I closed the lid and reopened it several times but nothing. NO LUCK!

Tried restarting it several times but still, the display won't start.

I tried to get into recovery mode but without display, I don't even know what's happening.

So, I got a HDMI cable and monitor and plugged it into my M2 Air. It is completely functional and I can run everything using the external monitor, touchpad & keyboard.

One thing I NOTICED is that, whenever I get into recovery mode, both the Macbook display and the External monitor stay black. Whenever I close the lid, I can see the recovery mode options on the external display. I am not sure if it is normal since I've never used an external monitor with a MacBook before.

So, I was opening the lid, moving the cursor, closing the lid to see the movement in the monitor if I was going in the right direction, reopening the lid, clicking on enter...

I am not sure what to do now.

I've been using it for 1.1 years and there are no records of drop or any kind of damage.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Just in case, did you try to adjust the brightness using the keyboard?

My MBA 15 sometimes gave me a very dim screen after opening the lid. I had to adjust the brightness to make the screen readable.

Maybe the backlight to the screen is out? Also possible is the GPU going out, but not sure if that's even possible with Apple Silicon.

Years ago I had a MBP with a GPU that died. The computer kept working (the screen was out), and plugging into an external monitor kept me going.

Yeah! I tried that. No luck!

When we lower the brightness to the least, the screen goes off and at least shows the grayish color backlight but here I am facing a pitch-black display that looks like it has no power at all.

Is there any way to check the GPU condition also options like restarting it? It shouldn't function with an external monitor if the GPU has failed, right?
