My wife has just got a new MacBook Air in Midnight. I was using it today for the first time and was distracted by white specks on the corners of some of the keys, all in the top left area of the keyboard. It looks like there's gaps in the black finish of the keys? Has anyone else seen this before?

I'll give Apple a shout, but I don't think I've ever seen this on a brand new machine, to even ones which have been used quite a lot tbh.

that looks like it's through the keycaps? I've never seen that before. My 14" MBP has a funny hot spot under the 4 Key, visible from some angles.

Yip! Weird right?

I know what you're talking about, where you can sometimes get a bit of light bleed from certain angles on some keys, but this is dead-on - looks like the finish hasn't been applied. I'll take it back in to Apple tomorrow morning.

Apple are going to swap it out... unfortunately they don't have any in stock so I'll have to keep an eye on their website and go in when they have one. Other option is to take a different colour Air in the meantime.

Apple needs to step up their game with these cheaply finished key caps. My M2 is only 4 months old, gets cleaned frequently, and not used that often. It is already getting ever-so-slight shiny keys on the A and S and D only. Between this, the keypad touching the screen, and the screen being a smudge/dust magnet, it’s way too much maintenance for an ultraportable. May wind up selling it since it’s in otherwise perfect condition and get something more rugged.

the key finish use to be way more durable. My 2017 MBP, despite its ultra flawed keyboard, took multiple years to develop the same amount of shine as my 14" MBP has in a single year.
