I havent heard any rumors for the m2 mac mini, but the mini is seriously due for an upgrade, and there has been little news about what october holds.

Leads me to believe that it could hold a m2 mac mini!

Thoughts? Anyone think apple will slap an m2 chip in the minis this october?

I think we will see the M2. But personally, I want the M2 Pro version 3nm node. I don’t expect that until next year. They’ll put those chips in the MacBook Pros first. But I’m holding out—though I could SCREAM by now!! I’m hoping I’m wrong and it comes out with the Macbooks! 😁

Well, actually not that seriously. MM2014 had been waiting for an upgrade for 4 years. But my point is that M2 is not that big an upgrade compared to M1 anyway, instead it may be hotter, throttle more and like 2x more expensive than a used M1 mini. M1 still not aged at all and feels itself perfectly fine and fast, especially for such a tiny computer.

Thanks for this thread. I was going to start my own after noticing the M2 Mini rumour mill slowing down somewhat, or rather shifting to Mac Mini Pros with M1 Max or Ultras. They’ll be too overpowered (and overpriced) for me.

I’m finally going to replace my 2012 iMac with a Mac Mini. I know the M1 will blow my current setup out of the water but I would hate to buy one a couple months before a new one releases.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there hasn’t been a single M1 device replaced with a new M2 model yet, right? For example, the MacBook Pro went straight to M2 right?

Annualised iPhones have brainwashed me into always thinking “just hold out a little longer” every year, but we surely won’t see a upgraded, similarly-priced, base level M2 Mac Mini so soon… Right?

Edit: I am wrong! See Boil’s post below 👍

Of the three Apple silicon Mac products first announced/released:
  • The 13" M1 MacBook Pro has been replaced by the 13" M2 MacBook Pro
  • The 13" M1 MacBook Air has been replaced by the redesigned 13" M2 MacBook Air
  • The M1 Mac mini has yet to be replaced with a M2 model, and the "high-end" 2018 Intel Mac mini is still available for sale, so who knows what Apple has planned there

Thank you, Boil! 👏 Do you recall there being much of a price increase if at all?

I’ve been on a slow replacement of my 2012 imac with a studio display and M1 Air 16gb/512 but am waiting for updated mini to keep it hooked up to it and have a bigger in-computer storage.
Maybe would’ve went with Mac Studio, but hearing about the whine noise, etc, I‘ve skipped it since the word about the M1 minis has always been it’s silent.
Guessing new mini at October event.

The M2 Air is, in the US, $200 more than the M1, which is still being sold. But besides the M2 upgrade, that also includes a better camera, speakers, screen, MagSafe, and the re-designed case.

The Mac Mini has a long history of being replaced later than fans of the product would like and in 2014 Apple disappointed by getting rid of the quad-core option, so there was a long wait from 2012 to 2018 for a new model with a quad-core CPU, and then Apple disappointed some by having the SSD soldered (with expensive prices to upgrade to higher capacity) and RAM much more difficult to replace than on the 2012 model.

Support for more external displays would be a nice thing that would hopefully come with a new high-end M2 Pro model.

Another big difference between the base M1 MBA and base M2 MBA is the M1 has a 7 core GPU and the M2 has an 8 core GPU. Also, the M2 has more video decoder formats.

Would an M2 in the Mac mini mean a higher RAM option than 16GB? I'd love 32.
EDIT: Looking at the M2 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Pro, it's looking like 24GB would likely be the Max RAM on the M2 mini. Not quite 32, but still a solid upgrade over the current 16GB. Reason enough to hold off on buying one.

I haven't heard any whine noice from my Mac Studio. But I also have the base model. There is more noise fan noise from my external hard drive than my Studio.
