I know this topic has been broadly discussed already, but I’ve just bought a 15” MacBook Air with 8GB Ram and 512GB SSD and I’m worrying that I’ve made a mistake.

Now, I’m quite computer savvy, have always built my own PC’s, have owned many MacBook Pro’s in the past and recently just sold my M1 MacBook Pro which had 16GB Ram and 512GB SSD as I found the 14” screen a tad too small.

There are two reasons I bought the model I went for, which are:

1) Main reason: It was the only 15” MacBook Air spec (apart from the 256GB model) that the vendor had available (it’s my mobile provider and they’ve started offering MacBooks at relatively low monthly costs, but you’re stuck with stock configurations).
2) I have a relatively powerful desktop PC which I can do any hugely demanding work on, so don’t need a particularly powerful laptop.

I do mainly graphic design in illustrator (but nothing huge) and web development, either in dreamweaver or chrome (if it’s a shopify site). I also do a small bit of video editing but mostly just piecing together vlogs for YouTube that nobody watches lol.

Do you think I’ll be ok sticking with the 8GB model? I completely don’t mind swapping the laptop in a year or so, but it does need to last me a year at least before I can justify an upgrade.

I’m asking now as I have 2 weeks to send it back if I change my mind.

I paid for a Mac Mini M2 with 8 GB RAM and 512 GB storage today (arriving in a week). I have a workflow similar to yours and think you will be OK.

But I already have a 13" MacBook Air M2 with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. I have been using it as my main computer for more than 2 months with zero issues. Using swap memory around 2-3 GB, but this is not concerning to me. And this 256 GB SSD is half slower than the 512 GB version. So I am sure that the Mac Mini 512 version I am waiting for is going to work even better.

I know I don't need 16 GB of RAM, and I doubt you need it too.

Enjoy your MacBook Air and don't stress too much about RAM. It will work like a charm!
