Previously, the M1 & M2 Macbook Airs were unable to run the Apple Studio Display at the highest "native" scaled resolution. They supported up to 2880x1620 whereas an Pro+ chip supported 3200x1800 on the same display.

Does anyone know if the new M3 Macbook Airs and M3 Macbook Pros support the 3200x1800 resolution?

Thanks!

So, clarity here.

The Apple Studio Display, depending on the Mac it is connected to, will have two different max scaled resolutions. You can see an example of a user working with this on stackexchange.

As examples, I took two pictures of an Apple Studio display I have access to. One is connected to a M1 Pro MacBook Pro, the second is the same screen connected to an M2 Macbook Air. What I'm hoping is that the M3 Macbook Air supports the higher resolution.

When in the Settings > Displays panel, select the "Advanced" button. In the "Advanced" panel, enable "Show resolutions as list". Back in the Display panel, enable "Show all resolutions". What resolutions do you see?

I can grab screenshots later, but it does not include the desired 3200x1800 in the full list. I was able to force it via `screenresolution` command on the M2 Macbook but it was very blurry and clearly not tuned for HiDPI in that forced mode.

I accept that this does not work on the M2 Macbook without shenanigans, what I'm wondering is if the M3 chip (non Pro/Max) have the same limitation.

Just checked this. M3 Air here and the "more space" resolution available is 2880x1620.

I never knew this before, had assumed it would be the same for all their laptops. I'm assuming my desktop will support the higher resolution so will check that too.

Checked my Mac Studio and yes, it can go to 3200x1800. Can't believe I never noticed this before.
Thanks for checking!

What chip is in your Studio?

My partner’s 14” MacBook Pro with M1 Pro also only goes to 2880 × 1620, but I’ve read that the same chip in a 16” goes to 3200 × 1800.

What a weird thing, I really wonder if this is deliberate on Apple’s part, or a bug.

I don’t get why some of the machines are capped at 2880. Presumably it would take more resources to render the unscaled 5120 × 2880, which is available on all of them (via option-clicking).

And also, all the M-series MacBook Airs can drive the Pro Display XDR, which is 3008 × 1692. I guess that’s a bit less but still, I can’t imagine there being that much of a difference in resources.

My Studio is an M2 Ultra.

Same issue with the m4 Mac mini base. No 3200x1800. Previously I had M3 Pro MacBook that was connected to it had no issue.
