Hey there!

I currently have an M1 Max MacBook Pro. My primary use-case is running it with the display closed, plugged into my Dell U4025QW (just got it last night) monitor, which has a resolution of 5120 x 2160. It supports VRR, but apparently my GPU can't do VRR at that resolution. I know the M1 Max technically has a beefier GPU than the M3 on a MacBook Air, but could the M3 on a MacBook Air drive that resolution? Like... is this a "feature gap" that newer hardware supports? Or... what's the deal here? I think I've read that a standard M2 could drive this monitor with VRR up to 120Hz, but I just want to verify.

THANK YOU!

Hey thanks for that post. I wonder if this can be addressed with a firmware update from Dell and/or a MacOS software update. Would be nice to make it official.

I’m not exactly sure, but maybe if you’re running the monitor through HDMI it could be limited by the HDMI 2.0 on the M1 Max.

The M2 added HDMI 2.1 support, which has VRR 4k HDR 120hz support. I don’t think that’s the issue you have but try using USB-C instead (if your using HDMI).

Did you ever get this working? I have an M1 Max and am considering purchasing the same monitor.

Did anyone get the EDID fix working on M1 Max? It's not working for me. I tried DP 1.2 through my Caldigit TS3 plus and also tried direct included TB3 from MBP to display.

@dingobiatch you're saying the EDID fix linked didn't work for an M1 Max? I was about to order this monitor but if I can't get 120hz @ 5120x2160 it's a dealbreaker.

I actually figured it out. You won't get 120 but you can get 110. The reason mine wasn't working was because I was plugged into my Caldigit TS3+ which is DP1.2. It also didn't work when plugged into via the included TB4 cable from my monitor to my MBP. But once I used a DP1.4 adapter into my Mac, it worked great.
