Okay… first post I’m reading as I start to consider upgrading away from my 9 year old iMac. When should the M5 be released?

I’ve just bought a MacBook Air. This is to supplement my iMac …as I’m officially HOLDING THE LINE TILL I DIE!

Hyperbole only gets you so far, friend. You are "convincing" exactly nobody with this line of conversation, and you are starting to sound more than a little unreasonable. (And that's me being as polite as I can manage.)

Yes: The iMac absolutely was Apple's salvation, at one time. So was the iPod. And the iPhone after that. Sometimes, products lose relevance and fall by the wayside. Like the iPod. It was the end of an era to be sure, but it wasn't nearly as upsetting as all that when Apple finally discontinued the last product in that particular lineup. People moved on.

If it turns out that the iMac's day has finally come and gone... so be it. No amount of misplaced loyalty is going to change that.

If Apple really is releasing a plethora of devices next week, the iMac ought to be included among them. It just gets so little love that @TSE feels compelled to have some fun.

If Apple throws in a curveball and crafts a 32” 6K iMac with M5Pro or Max chip I will certainly return to the fold. They remain my favourite computers.

That would be too big for me. I reckon 27" would be good.

Honestly though, if it we can get an M5 Pro or Max in it, I don't care what size it is, money would be the only object to my getting one.

This has been my commentary on the iMac as well, for years: 27" has always been a sweet spot that simply can't be beat. And now, having recently had the direct experience of working at a desk with three 32" 4K monitors spread across it, I can confidently state that even a config with two of those beasts is just too darned big.

If it turns out that Apple really is planning to produce this mythical 32" iMac, than personally, I think they should go back to those studies they did years ago that led to the design of that first 27" iMac, and re-read their own analysis.

I can’t imagine 3x32” 4K monitors! I use 2x28” 4K monitors, and I often feel they’re just a bit too big. 24-27 seems to be my comfort zone.

I have a Studio Display and I no longer find it nearly large enough. 32” is a minimum for me. We’ll see; I doubt they’re going to offer one but hope dies last…

I’m probably going to be in the market for a new iMac soon. I’ve had my current for 9 years so I’m looking to get the most use from it in the future. Do you feel I’d be fine in the long term getting an M4 now? Current was released in November ‘24.

How can any of you M4ers live with yourselves when right around the corner is the most glorious of upgrades? The M5 offers super sweet single core, and downright diabolical multi core performance, with storage speeds that make M4 Ultra SSDs feel like floppy disks, not to mention those wonderfully delicious neural accelerators, and light speed memory bandwidth!!! The time is NOW! Make room on your Titanium Apple Cards and CHARGE!!!!

I've been holding the line with a 2019 Intel MBP, but the M5 Max is the game-changing life-saving money-making platform ready to take AI performance and my personal well-being to the next level!

*Gonna put this right here just in case.

Depends how badly you need it. If you NEED it, just go ahead and get the M4. It's great, and will work well for a long time. If you can hang out for a little while longer, wait for the M5, then you get a bit more potential lifespan out of it.
