M4 Mac mini Kernel panics (windowserver)

Hi Everyone!

I've been getting multiple kernel panics a day on my baseline M4 Mac mini over the last few weeks. It says its with Windowserver, but I'm not entire sure how to pinpoint it. I set my mini to never got to sleep and its plugged into a Samsung odyssey G8 that I recently picked up. I've been playing around with VM Fusion, Google RemoteDesktop, and CrossOver recently but not sure if those may be the culprit. I'm about to go run diagnostics and do a reinstall of the OS just in case it's a bad driver. But any suggestions would be great!

I’ve gotten two KPs on the Mac mini M4 Pro I have while gaming two different games in full screen.

Log has this (among other things):

userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from WindowServer

Will wait and see if Sequoia 15.4 coming next week makes a difference. If not I will start troubleshooting third party software and/or report the problem to Apple.

watchdogd is a daemon process that sits and waits for certain system events. If it expects something (like WindowServer) to check in every so often and it doesn’t, it will declare a watchdog timeout. Sometimes this can be due to flaky hardware (e.g. a GPU) or a bug in the OS.

How your setup? When I posted about this issue it was because I had a Samsung monitor and had to use a USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable to connect. Then the KP’s stopped.

DisplayPort via USB-C to a Philips 32M2N8900 display. Was using Variable (48-240 Hertz) when the Kernel Panics happened (if that matter).

Hmm… I updated to 15.4 now and I can only choose Variable (48- 165 Hertz) now. So maximum 165 Hertz. I wonder why. Is there a know problem going higher that has now been disabled? 🤔

Anyway, I will try to see if I can reproduce the Kernel Panic now or not.

Sounds good. Let us know how it goes. If I remember correctly, another suggestion when I had the issue was to set the variable. I’m not home but I think I set mine to either 60 or 120.

OK, but I feel it should support up to 240 Hz in variable (i.e. 48-240 Hz) as well as 240 Hz non-variable without a Kernel Panic :)

And to be clear I can go to 240 Hz when having that as a fixed refresh rate, it is just the variable one that now says it goes to maximum 165 Hz.
