I'm wondering if this is "normal" behaviour or just an issue with my M4 Mac mini which I just got the other day.

The login screen appears and I enter my password. Then a loading bar appears which hangs at around the 5% mark for a good 30-60 seconds, then the desktop suddenly appears and everything appears to be working fine.

And one time earlier this evening, after hanging as above, the computer rebooted. From that point the previous behaviour started again.

Little bit worried that there's a fault with the computer.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any way I can find out what might be causing this issue?

Can't help much except to say I haven't seen that at all with my M4 Mini.

It doesn't sound right, although I don't know why it would be doing it.

This does not look normal. It looks like this happens when the system is loading the runtime display (GPU) driver.
I would wait for the 15.3 update, when it will likely install a new version. Also, check into the cabling of your display and the display itself.

Similar behavior here. Power on the mac mini and pretty quickly password prompt appears without loading bar prior. Enter password then loading bar starts. Don’t remember it hanging at 5% but will take a little bit to run through the loading bar (Probably not quite as long as 30-60 seconds) and then desktop appears.

It’s almost as if Apple has switch when the loading bar appears. On every other Mac I have had it was… restart, loading bar, password prompt, enter password, then desktop appears.

My new M4 Mac Mini… restart, password prompt, enter password, loading bar, then desktop appears.

I’ve also been getting a message saying I’ve run out of system memory quite frequently when using Photoshop too. I have 64GB Ram and don’t run into this issue with my laptop with 16GB of Ram while working on the same files so I’m not really sure what the issue is.

Anyone have insight or similar experience?

I see the same ting with my M4 Pro mini, 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Takes it 2-3 seconds to boot to login, then 30 seconds to boot to desktop. I assumed it was initializing my two external HDDs, as that always takes time whenever I trigger Spotlight, but I guess I could test to see if it happens if they aren't attached.
