I'm getting ready to retire my 2019 Mac Book Air (16MB ram/512 SSD). It primarily functions as a desktop connected to a 32" LG monitor and is used for general web browsing, email and light use MS Office activities as I'm retired. I'm debating whether to replace it with a M4 MacMini or M4 MBP. I like being able to pack it up and use it wherever but the reality is it just sits on my desk connected to the big screen. Performance wise either will work for me but is the mini a better overall machine ?

Obviously this is only a personal opinion, guided by my personal experience.
I had to make the same decision a couple of years back and decided to go for the mini.
Like you I think I unplugged my MBP twice in its life to do some multitrack recordings in the field, the rest of the time it was constantly connected to my monitor, with cables awkwardly coming out of it left and right.
The irony is that since I freed the MBP from the chains of my monitors, I have used it more as a laptop than ever before, and it is still great for multitrack recording in the field, in fact it is now an appliance dedicated to that task.
It also helps that being an older model, I have zero worries about it getting damaged or stuff like that.

In the meantime the mini is sitting elegantly in my studio and I got better specs, due to its being cheaper like for like.
